Dogs names with same first letter, is it bad idea?

Hey everyone, well we have had our shih poo for a week now. We named him Boomer. We also have a 6yr old red heeler mix named Bear. Is it a bad idea to name them with the same first letter? I dont know how quick a puppy picks up on his name but would it be too late to change it? It is like Bear thinks we are talkin to him when we are talkin to Boomer. The puppy just doesnt really respond to anything yet. So I guess I just need some advice on this name thing. Its just the kids get them mixed up....they go to call the puppy and they accidently say Bear instead of Boomer...and vise versa. Please any ones opinion would be great

 

I believe dogs have the intelligence to distinguish between even minute variance in sounds therefore I don't think naming two dogs with the same first letter will make any difference once your puppy learns his name. I think this is a very common practice.
I believe your older dog just needs time to adjust to the fact that he is not the only dog there.
Duke and Freckles both come running when I holler out the name "Treat" so go figure.

 

I woulnd think so, but it could be, that Bear is identifying with the "Buh" sound of the B in Bear, maybe he doesnt have good hearing so the B sound is throwing him off

 

I don't think it is a problem. I had two dogs named Stanley and Samantha at the same time. Just like dogs can know sit and stay.

 

Thanks for all your input. I like the way Bear and Boomer sound together. It will just take time to keep it all straight. The kids forget Boomer sometimes so they just end up saying puppy. But hopeuflly it will stick with them soon. As for Bear...yeah it is an adjustment having this little guy biting and tuggin on him all hte time...but he just lays there and takes it like a good big brother. Thanks agian for your info...wouldnt know what else to name him if this was an issue.

 

I don't think thats a problem at all If I did I wouldn't have named all 4 of our big dogs, Monzaya, Mufassa, Montiego and Monique. They all knew who I was talking to when I called them--they have all gone to Heaven now--but greatly missed
