Hello. I just recently purchased a new American Bulldog puppy and he's NKC registered. I'm not new to owning dogs, but new to dog's with papers. If I ever decide to breed him do I have to stick with females registered to NKC only or can I do so with other registries? Thanks in advance.

Not jumping on your or anything, but if you don't know that..please don't breed. Though I've never heard of Nkc??? Don't know if its reputable or not.

You've got YEARS and I mean YEARS of research to do before you consider breeding. Please...there are enough ABD's out there.....many with problems.

Apparently the NKC is the National Kennel Club.

The AKC & CKC are what I would consider the "reputable" registries for N.A. In order to register your dog AKC or CKC *hereby referring to American & Canadian Kennel Clubs (not Continental Kennel Club) the sire & dam MUST registered with these clubs. That said AKC, CKC or any other registry is NOT an assurance of quality. They are breed registries. A means for maintaining records for pedigrees.

In North America many breeds (typo) are eligible for AKC or CKC registration. I would not buy from a breeder who does not reg their dogs. So if you are considering breeding should you be concerned with "A means for maintaining records for pedigrees"? Absolutely! Beware some registries will register anything that remotely resembles a breed or a dog for that matter, often with a pedigree unknown or falsified. This can wreak havoc on a breeding program as it may lead to unknown history of dogs, health issues and improper selection of proper structure and breed type. Anyone considering breeding should be well aware of such things.

The AKC does not recognize the American Bulldog. I don't know about the CKC, but I suspect they also do not recognize the AB. The UKC (United Kennel Club) might, as they are more open to new and rare breed registration, and have procedures in place for accepting new breeds.

While the AKC and CKC recognize a large number of breeds, there are many more unrecognized breeds than there are recognized breeds. Many of them are old, established breeds developed in Europe and Asia, as well as newer breeds that have been developed in all parts of the world. There simply are not enough of them in this part of the world to cause the AKC and CKC to concider them at this time.

Now, to the original question; most registries that are on the up-and-up require both parents to be registered with their organization before they accept registrations on puppies. It would be more important to find the national breed club for your breed and find out what their standard and requirements are. The American Bulldog is relatively new to the world of purebred dogs, and much work needs to be done to establish it as a legitimate breed.

And as a new owner of a new breed, you have much work to do, too. If you can find a mentor from the national breed club who will help you to understand what you're doing, you'll be miles ahead of those who stumble around on their own. There's a whole lot more involved than putting a bitch and dog together and getting a litter of pups in 9 weeks.

Not thinking clearly .... :( Ackkkk Sorry Diamond, couple of booboos I was thinking Bull Terrier NOT Bulldog!!!!!!!!! (Bull terrier IS recognized with AKC/CKC)

Browse through the American Bulldog Association http://www.american-bulldog.com/ABA_Clubs.htm to find national and regional clubs to see what registry they recommend - maybe it is the NKC? Some breed clubs have their own registries - I'm sure the club's secretaries or education committees will be able to assist you better.
    Cheers
