I was given sky by my daughter-in-law, hes blue and white and she was told a year ago hes a male, his cere is tan and no blue on it, so is he a He? I just bought gg at a pet store 3 weeks ago, the worker pressed her underside and says shes a female as thats what I wanted, but her cere is on the blue side and her colors are green and yellow, not sure her age probably 4 or 5 months, do you think shes a gal by what the pet store told me, Sky is the verbal one and has mimic me, he learns very quickly and GG is on the shy side although she makes her beak go when you talk to her, any info would help. Thank you

Hi female budgies have a white/tan or pinkish purple cere which will turn very dark brown when ready to breed.

Males have either a purple or blue cere depending on the age of the birds all males will resemble the female until there first molt at 4-6months old.

Using the method the store owner is not accurate and should only be done by a professional person as he/she could have caused her some serious problems.

So sky is female and and gg is male.

When buying new birds when you have a bird at home they should never be put in the same cage until 30days after taking it home it should be placed in a cage of its own this just to make sure it has nothing wrong with it as the stress from coming into a new enviroment can cause the illness or virus to show itself.

If your planning on breeding you will need to wait until they are 18-24months before breeding them as the younger the female the higher the risk of egg binding and sudden death if not noticed and treated ASAP.

here is a link that has pictures of male and female budgies the males have the blue cere and the females the tan and white ceres.
The first picture is of a young budgie that has not gone through its first molt yet..
