Drooling!

Hi everyone...I have a question. I started crateing Sydney today when I leave so she doesnt tear up my house agian. When I took her out I noticed she was drooling, and her cage was wet with what I thought was pee but turned out to be drool. I use to crate her when she was 2 months old, and she would do the same thing and throw a fit and never stop barking. But when I put her in she doesnt make any sounds anymore and when I get there, there is saliva and shes drooling all over the place. Her fur on her arm gets soaked even. What could cause this?

Yes, excessive drooling can definitely be caused by stress.

 

Reese does this when I put him in the truck. He has a real vehicle phobia. He just sit in the truck and he drools these long old slobbers that soaks him and the truck seat. I think it's just fear, anxiety, or even a phobia. It will even make him throw up. At first I just thought he was car sick. But he does it before we even leave the driveway.

Sydney sounds like Reese, ultra sensitive.

 

You should work on separation anxiety. There are some good posts about that if you do a search in this forum. Patricia McConnell has a book called "I'll Be Home Soon" which is probably a good book, judging by the rest of her work.

 

i don't think it is necessarily seperation anxiety, but just an anxiety. My cat did this in her crate flying from Usa to Germany, and she was right beside my friend(who had taken care of her for 2 months) the whole time. I think it is definitel some srt of fear and nervousness of being inside and not knowing when they are coming out and what is going on. But I don'T know could be the Sepration anxiety

When I first got her at 2 months and she did this I thought it was seperation anxiety because she would also cry and bark when I left and would never be quite till I came back. However now when I leave she doesnt care, she doesnt make a sound, even when I have put her in the crate, its just excessive drooling. I think she just has nerves being in the crate. It just freaks me out cause sometimes she is really wet and there is drool all over the bottom of the crate. Maybe she will get use to it and eventually it wont be scary for her.

 

Maybe you can try some different things to see if it helps. Like, put an old shirt of yours in with her, so she has your smell. With smaller pups, a ticking clock outside the crate helps. Or a stuffed animal in the crate, unless she will eat it. If the crate is wire, how about covering it so she can't see out? Or if it is plastic, borrow a wire crate and see if she feels better when she can see. Where is the crate? Is she in the same room with the other dogs? If so, maybe she would be better alone. If not, maybe she would be better with the others. Where does she sleep at night? Maybe the crate should be in the same room that she normally sleeps in.
