Hey everyone. To my surprise...I found a finch egg in a different cage last night. This pair has yet to lay any....but this morning there wasn't any more. Is there any reason my finches are only laying 1 then quit? A few days ago a totally different pair laid one egg, and the other day they ate it. I haven't noticed these 2 mating....and I got an egg 2 days after I got the hen from someone, and she wasn't kept in that great of condition. Then last night I found one in another cage....and today, nothing. With these 2, I have noticed them mating....for quite awhile. Then this morning I found ANOTHER finch egg in the nest with the 16 day old baby! Is this normal? I thought the first clutch had to at least leave the nest before they'd lay anymore! Well any info would be very appreciated! thanks in advance!

Omg your having a time of it.

Some birds are so eager to have another clutch they will still lay eggs while there is chicks in the nest.
The reason they eat the eggs is because they are lacking something in there diet or because there was something wrong with it, Finch's seem to know when there eggs are not fertile so the best way to keep there nest clean and free from germs is to either throw the eggs from the nest or eat them you will find its usually the male that does the eating..

Because the other pairs can hear the chick crying so its making them broody so you can be sure won't be long before you have more eggs from them all.
