Has anyone used this before? My new house has a 1/2 acre of yard for my pup to run & play in. But I know fencing isnt a sure thing for these dogs. I have a tie-down with a 20 ft lead for him, but I would like him to run freely with me when I'm outside etc. Lou still being a pup, likes to try & wander off at times. So I was thinking of installing one of these fences just to prevent any mishaps. Anybody have any thoughts on these?

Don't know anyone personally with electronic fences. I know it's used for cattle confinement. I have 8' cinder block walls around my property with iron gates. It's like Fort Knox! They are very secured so that the dogs could never get out. I've heard electronic fensing is expensive, though. You might compare the price of electronic to cinder block around a 1/2 acre.

    what kind of fence?

Do you mean the electronic fence that is esentially wires with electricity running thru them?

No idea how these would work.

or do you mean the "invisible" electronic fence, that has the collar that gives a shock when they "cross the fence"?

if so, i've heard they dont work too well with pit bulls due to their high tolerance for pain.

Don't waste your money! We put one up around almost 2 acres and my silly dogs just ran right through the thing! They yelped for a second when they ran through and that was it. And other animals can come into your yard with no problem. We were guaranteed it would work...And well that guarantee was not much of a guarantee and in the end we were out about $400 for a useless piece of crap! It kept my pekingese in the yard but the pit bulls Forget it!

I know of people who have shorter fences and rather than re-fencing with 6' fence of some kind they put a wire accrossed the top (electric)... It discourages climbing GREAT and it's another added bonus that to get OVER the fence as an intruder...you'd get a pretty good shock... They're made for livestock so they pack a pretty good punch (the horse kind is what's generally used)...

Invisible fencing is never a sure bet and should never be fully trusted... LOTS of hit by car accidents happen when dogs contained like this run into the streed OUT of their yard... Not the best idea AT ALL.

underground fencing isn't good enough. I did a 1/2 acre. (My husband is still bitchin). Tested it out on dee. She went toward the invisable fence and got zapped. Thing is, she was going crazy because she kept jumping around 'inside' the zone. She didn't think enough to RUN away from it. She just stayed there and jumped around and yelped. It was sickening. It only lasted a few seconds, but that was too long for me. that was the end of that. As Sara mentioned, I have the 4ft wire fence with the hotwire. But it really works better by stringing the wire 6 -8 inches from the BOTTOM of the fence because that is naturally the part of the fence they are closer too. We have it on top and bottom. The top has never been touched - ever. So if you can only do one part, do the BOTTOM. The BEST thing I have ever did. Haven't had an escape in years. Once they get zapped, they don't go 3ft near it. It gets to be a pain sometimes retrieving toys that have rolled to close to the fence. The will NOT go near the fence, even if it's their favorite toy. lol.. We only have the fence on, probably, a couple weeks out of the year (to remind them).....

I was afraid that their "thick" heads would keep it from working. :p At least I didnt go spend the money to find out on my own. So an electric "hot wire" for livestock should be what I'm after.

My friend had horses and they had the electric fence. Their dogs went through it once and only once when they learned that it would bite them. They were really concerned they would go in and try to chase the horses but no worries there. Only problem was they learned that it made a low buzz when on and if they didnt hear it we would see them trying to creep in there. But usually the only time it was off was when we were in the pasture so we could get them out when they tried to sneak in.

I would say yes, with standard 4 ft wire fencing.
