Eye infection - vet or no?

I think Indy has an eye infection. One of his eyes has had some white/gray/brownish goo. More than usual - he's a St. Bernard so there is always some goo. But this goo is different. It is just in one eye. I have some leftover antibiotics from Lucy, I forget the name of the stuff, but I don't think it would last more than a few days. Do you think I should give him the stuff for a few days? Or take him to the vet? I hate going to the vet for something like this b/c I know he needs antibiotics but they charge $40 just to see him, then the antibiotics are another $40 or more. :( But I don't want it to get worse, or me make it worse by giving him just a few antibiotics, or give it to the puppy. It doesn't seem real bad, not a lot of goo, but some. Or maybe give it a few days to see if it clears up on its own? Whatdya think?

Nala used to have goo every morning. A few times it got profuse and then turned green, and we got antibiotic/steroid drops. They would clear it right up, but it would come back sooner or later. One vet told us to keep a supply of the drops and just give them "on demand." To me, that was just asking for creating resistant bacteria. I thought about taking her to an eye specialist, but I figured they would just tell me the same thing. I didn't want to jeopardize her vision, but I hate giving drugs chronically!

That's when I ended up finding homeopathy. We tried some remedies that fit not only the eye symptoms, but her whole personality. While it didn't improve overnight, one day I noticed she didn't have goop when she woke up. It has been gone ever since.

Something you could try with Indy is to get Anitra's Herbal Eye Wash (http://www.wholesalesupplementstore.com/pet-eye-wash.html). Don't tell my homeopath, LOL. It's a combination remedy and you will be using it to treat one single symptom, which is sort of a homeopathic no-no. But I did use it once with Nala before we got the symptoms cleared up for good, and it was wonderful! Even if Indy needs it on a regular basis, I would MUCH rather give something like that than an antibiotic.
