the four in one advantage is what i use for my animals and a flea comb. you have to brush backwards for the fulll effect of the comb to work it picks up fleas and you can stick them in a bag and throw them away. it also helps if you clean everything that your cat has touched because there are probibly fleas on those things too.

Please be carefull with flea collars. I've heard terrible horror stories about them.

It may be unpopular here to have as uneducated opinion as mine, but here it is: Either Advantage or Program will be better for your cat and household than fleas or flea collars. It doesn't really matter which one you use, especially on an indoor cat that won't be exposed to ticks and such.

Hi Momma. :D I have always used Advantage flea drops. You can only get this from your vet. A lot of the ones from pet stores and the internet are counterfeit. I know this for a fact as my local pet store was carrying counterfeit Advantage. Thanks to one of Nern's posts I was able to tell it was a counterfeit product and did not put it on my best pal, Handsome (rest in peace). You place it behind the neck, once a month and each single dose costs between $10-$14 (U.S. dollars). It works very well and is worth the money. I have also heard good things about Program, although I have never used it.

Make sure to also vacuum your home very well and always dispose of the vacuum contents right away. If you have a vacuum with a bag in it, this is not always very convenient, so you can put the flea collar into the bag as you vacuum to help kill the fleas.

Flea collars in general are pretty useless, when used around a cats neck. The fleas just end up hanging out on the lower trunk of the cat's body.

One last thing. Never use ANY over the counter flea products that you can purchase at pet stores or food stores. This includes, powders/sprays and flea drops. Some of these, especially Hartz products can make cats very ill and have actually killed cats.

Years ago, I used to use the Hartz flea collars on my kitties. For some strange reason, Pumpkin always got very sick when the collar is on her. :( Luckly, our household is both flea and worm free but if they should need flea treatment, I'll use safer products offered by our vet. Thanks for the advice!

    Fleas

Hi! I found a flea today on a blanket from my 10 mo.old cat Tigger. I called my vet and asked what I should use, and they reccomended the Advantage drops. It's real easy to apply, and it's supposed to work for a month, I think. I've always wondered if those flea collars really work. I've never used on, and now hearing they could make pets sick, I'm really glad that these drops are available. I picked it up today from the vet's office, and it was about $10.00 for 1 application. Nano

Chessmind.......I had no idea that was the case. Ironically, I had used this very product on Napster about 2 days before she got sick (as you mat remember in my other thread). The vets couldn't figure out what was wrong with her.......maybe it was related to this Hartz thing.

I am SOOOOOO glad I came to this board - I have learned so much. My mouth fell open when I read the Harts thing though.

i was told that advantage is supposed towork for 4 months, but i think that they'er exagerating because buster, shadow, and abby are getting feas afer only a month.
