Got a new kitty

We just got back from taking Jupiter to live with my brother in California. Somewhere along the line we developed a 4 cat rule. There must 4 cats in the house at all times, otherwise it just seems too empty.

So we visited the Sedalia animal shelter (where we got all our other cats) but nothing there really cried out "take me" (well, all of them did, but none really seemed to have enough personality to fit in at our house). So we decided to look at the Warrensburg animal shelter. We'd been there several years ago but weren't impressed with the care of their animals so we normally woudn't even consider them but for some reason we decided to check them out.

We weren't even there for 5 minutes and we'd found the perfect kitty. She started reaching out and attacking me through the door of the cage and threw herself at the door when the worker came up. Apparently she was adopted once but brought back because "she was too wild".

She's about 3 months old and other than being a tiny bit thin and having some serious food aggression (I've never really seen that in cats before), she's in pretty good health.

We named her Scout and so far she's fitting in pretty good. Tennessee took an immediate liking to her and is treating her like a little baby sister. They're actually so much alike it's almost scary. I forsee them getting into lots of trouble together. Romeo is jealous because Tennessee was his best buddy but he'll get over it. And Emily is just hissing and keeping her distance, but she's actually doing better than she did when we introduced Romeo & Tennessee.

What a pretty kitty. I used to have a gray stripped kitty the look very similar. Best of luck with your new member of the family. I hope all the kitties adjust to each other easily. Keep us posted.

Aww, she looks just like a furrier version of my Vianne :) I used to have a little white mouse named Scout and she had a little golden colored buddy named Jem, from the book To Kill A Mockingbird. Is that where you got it from?

Kodak, the little gray foster kitten in the Pic with Vianne in the photo contest was pretty wild when I got her. She was born feral and was EXTREMELY food aggressive. You couldn't get near her while she was eating or she would start growling and then do a full on attack, lol. Luckily she was so small when I got her(under 2 lbs) that she wasn't impossible to handle. I gave her a couple weeks to settle in and become best buddies with Vianne before I started working with her on it. It took her a good 2 months of training every time she ate, but she eventually got over it. I know it sounds mean, but what i did was i started slowly waving a spoon by her dish when she was eating and she'd get mad, but after a few attacks and hisses, she would be so hungry and interested in the food, she would keep trying to eat anyway and eventually would just growl while she ate and only hiss or swat if i touched her. When she got better at dealing with the spoon, I started making her eat her meals while sitting in my lap, then later when that was ok, I'd pet her while she ate and so on til it was no big deal to her anymore and she realized her dinner wasn't in jeapordy. So good luck with that! Tedious sort of training, but Kodak came around very well and quicker than I expected.

Congrats on the new baby!

Congrats on the new addition! She even looks wild...may be the long hairs in her ears. But very pretty!!

So why did you take Jupiter to live with your brother?

Yup. We always said that Tennessee is like Scout only meaner and the new kitty is quite a bit like Tennessee (I wouldn't be suprised if I found out they were related)

Because she's his kitty. When he moved out there, he flew and didn't want to take on the plane. It's been about 2 years, but we finally had enough time to drive out there to deliver Jupiter and some of his things. She's happy to be with her daddy again and is getting along fairly well with my brother & his girlfriend's other 2 cats (ie they're afraid of her  ).

Scout has developed a minor cases of the sneezes so we'll probably take her to the vet on Monday, just to get her checked out. But things are going pretty good with the other cats. She & Tennessee are having a blast together. Romeo isn't hissing at her quite as much. And she decided she wants Emily to be her surrogate mother, but Emily doesn't really agree. Scout will try to climb on Emily & cuddle with her only to be met with some really nasty looks. But so far no real aggression isses. And earlier, all 4 were sitting in the recliner with me.

We took her to the vet today because she's still sneezing a little but it's just a minor cold. She also has ear mites so she got her ears cleaned out and some meds. The vet tech kept going on about how cute she was even while she was biting his hand. But she really is turning out to be a sweet cat and not nearly as wild as some of our others were when we got them. I don't know what was wrong with the people that adopted her and brought her back, but I'm glad they did.

Oh, and all the cats are getting along great now. They're cuddling & playing & licking eachother. The other 3 even got upset when we put her in the carrier to take her to the vet. When we got back, Tennessee went to her and started licking her on the head (she & Romeo both went through the ear mite thing recently so they can sympathize).
