Guppies in a pond???????????

I mentioned to a coworker the other day that I have an overabundance of guppy fry. He told me he wanted all of them to put in his pond. I told him no, several times in fact because I'm afraid they'll die in the winter as his pond is not heated. It can get below freezing in the winter where we live. He assured me they would be fine, but I just don't buy it. Does anyone know if they could live in a pond during the winter?

 

If its well regulated the fact that its a pond shouldnt be two much of a problem, but you definitally right, just because its a pond doesnt mean thy wont die if it gets to cold/hot, im not very sure how to go about keeping tropical fish in a pond anyway.

 

Although I have a ton of guppies in my pond, I don't really expect them to survive the winter (they're doing great now, though). Of course, my pond is pretty deep and guppies are pretty hardy, so who knows. It was either the pond or the oscar tank.

Dave, the original male guppy to go in the pond, actually started out in the oscar tank. My 10 gallon was getting too full of guppies and I had to make room for african cichlid fry, so they went to the oscars. One of them was a very pregnant female who gave birth in the oscar tank. I had 8 little fry that survived for about 2 weeks w/o the oscars paying any attention to them. Then after another week, they started getting eaten until Dave was the only one left. I figured if he could survive 3 weeks in an oscar tank, he deserved to be rescued.

Then Mae & Marilyn, the originaly 2 females, where a couple of fry I missed when I was clearing the guppies out of the 10 gallon. Now from just those 3 guppies, I probably have over a 100 in my pond after just 4 weeks.
