Hair pretty badly matted

Ok, so my uncle is the owner of three cats. One of these cats, Nala, has had her hair pretty badly matted the last few months. It's gotten to the point where I am about ready to take her to the groomers, as he doesn't want to spend the money to have it cleaned. It's been suspected that she'd rolled around in poo in the past and it's just kind of created this shell around her backside.

Any advice? Do you think this can be treated at home or has it gotten to the point where I'll have to take her to a groomer?

As I can't post links, I'll try and lead you to a site with pictures of her without posting a link.

Hi and welcome. I'd take her to the groomers. It can be pretty tricky to do this at home. Especially since it's so close to the skin. They'll do a good job.

I wasn't able to get to your pics. Feel free to private message me the link and I will will post them for you.

That's really kind of you to help this cat, even though it's not yours. :y_the_best:

Looking at the pics, she does need to see a groomer. Just way too tough to get those out.

I agree with Chessmind to let the groomers take care of the mats.... those are very hard to get out and are usually really close to the skin so letting a professional do it they are better trained.
Good luck and it is nice that you are taking care of her in this ordeal.

yes definitely off to a groomer - that has to be painful.
And also dangerous. Mats like that have the potential to pull the skin tight enough it'll tear (happened to my neighbor's cat - he ended up having to be on antibiotics, etc....he was old so his skin was thinner).
Might even have to go to a vet to be put under in order to clean that mess up.
Remind your uncle, after, that brushing will help that not happen again.

I would take her to the vet if I were you, they can give her narcosis (correct word?) and comb out the mats. I did that to my cat, he wasn't as bad as your uncle's cat, but it was impossible for me to do it at home. Good luck :)
