Does anyone know about hand rearing lovebirds(peach faced). 1 out of 3 eggs have hatched so far. I was wondering if it might be best to hand rear it. The mother sits on the other 2 eggs, but she also is sitting on her hatched baby. I am worried that she might squash it. Its about 6 hours old. I can't get a close look. If i do hand rear, does anyone know how much parrot rearing food I have to give, and how often.

Hi the parenst do still sit on there chicks to keep them warm she will not squash them..

If the parents are feeding them then there is no need to interfere.
The only time i hand feed my chicks is if the parents are not feeding them, have abandoned the nest or attacking the chicks.

So its best just to leave them see how they get on.
Also the parents dont usually start feeding the chicks until about 24hours after it first hatches this is normal and no need to worry.

I am sorry to say but unfortunately the babies did not survive.

I looked this morning and they were as flat as pancake.

It was the father who had done this. I was absolutely very upset with my male Lovebird Sammie.

At least now i know that next time Georgie lays a clutch to hand raise them as it is much too risky that Sammie may do it again.

I asked a nice lady at the pet shop near me about it and she said that he should only have been going in the nesting box only to feed her. This was not happening he was in there most of the time just because he was bored in the other section of the enclosure.

Does anyone know what you give the babies when she lays the next clutch?

Hi i am so sorry about your loss...
Lovebirds like all birds will still sit in the nest with the chicks the problem with petshop owners or petshop assistants is that they are not trained or have little to no knowledge of the animals that they sell...

If she lays another clutch you can buy a special bird rearing food its an egg food and has everything the chicks need.

It has instructions on the back of the packet telling you how to make it up and it is then fed to the chicks through a syringe without the needle and they have to be fed every 1-2hours around the clock...

Again i am so sorry to hear they did not survive hopefully next time will be better....
