Hi everyone. I am a newbie here.

I rescued my simese Chloe from the animan shelter last week. The day after I brought her home I noticed her sneezing and then a stuffy nose. I got a free vet check from a local vet so when I took her in he gave me some Amoxicilian. It doesn't seem to be helping at all. She acts fine and eats like a pig. It is just her stuffiness that concerns me. Should I take her back to the vet. I didn't particularly like this vet so will see another one. Any advice to this new mom would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there! My new cat Isabelle is just getting over her URI, she is still sneezing a little but when she was sick all she did was sleep, she didnt eat for 3-4 days. How long has your new kitty been on the meds? It might takes 2-3 days to start noticing an improvment. Luckily your girl is eating, she must be feeling somewhat ok. Is the medicene pink liquid that you shoot with a syringe?

hi & welcome to the forum :)

I have 5 cats who at one point all had cat flu, they got it after I took one of them to the vets to have a loose tooth removed,( there must have been a cat in the who had cat flu), a couple of days later she was sneezing & stuffed up and looked terrible, I took her back to the vet and they said there isn't any real treatment for it much like a human cold.
It spead to the other 4 cats very quickly and I soon had 5 cats with blocked noses and sneezes (it was a nightmare!)

The important thing is she is eating, a lot of cats won't eat food if they can't smell it and then they aren't as strong to fight off any illness. Sounds like your not having this problem which is good.

If you want to help her feel less blocked up a good way to do it is get your bathroom all steamed up and take the cat in there for 10 - 15 minutes, it helps a lot and if she does stop eating put food down in the bathroom or feed her straight afterwards

Hope she feels better soon :)

Yes, it is the pink med you shoot with a syringe but she loves it so I just squirt it on her wet food and she licks it right up. She will be on it a week tomorrow. It seems like that should be enough time. That is what has me concerned.

My cat finished her medicene on Monday, she is still snezzing but definitly not like she was, and sometimes her nose is still a little stuffed, but she plays and eats a lot. I asked the vet if that as normal and they said yes.So dont worry if your done with the meds and she still sneezes once in a while.I would only worry if her condition gets worse rather then better.

Then agian if your worried I would call your Vet and ask. :)

Just wanted to add, your lucky your cat likes the taste of that stuff. I had to put it in her mouth, luckily after the second time I figured out a way to make it easy on both of us. Did your medicene smell like bubblegum? I loved the smell, reminded me of when i was younger :)

Thanks for all your replies. I feel a lot better now. Maybe just like human crud that stuff has to run its course with animals as well.

YES, the med smells just like bubblegum. I must have taken bottles of that stuff as a kid and it brought back memories for me too.
I guess I can be thankful she is eating. She was skin and bones when I adopted her so she couldn't afford to lose much. She has actually put on a pound or 2. I will try to get a picture in my profile in the next couple of days.

congrats on adopting a wonderful breed of cats  I foster for Siamese Rescue out of VA and I adore the breed.

URIs can take awhile to go away even with antibiotics. It's very common for cats to come out of shelters with URIs....and extremely common for Siamese as they don't deal with shelters well and some of her cold could have been strictly stress related. Every Siamese foster I've gotten has been pulled from a shelter and so far each and everyone has come to me with URI. Siamese get stressed easily in shelters....they can go downhill quickly as they will give up and stop eating. I'm not saying no other cat will do this - but meezers are notorious for just giving up and getting really ill in shelters.

If her immune system is weakened at all it could take awhile for her to get over her cold, but she's eating fine so I wouldn't be alarmed. She'll be doing better soon.

I had one foster who literally stopped eating and had to be force fed for weeks....I think she liked it LOL she certainly wasn't losing any weight.
