have you ever seen those needles?

for inserting microchips? They are HUGE. I got my stash today as we now have to microchip fosters....vet will during their vet check. I swear as soon as they stick a foster w/one of those needles I'm going to be out cold.
I had Molly chipped when she was spayed but I've never had the cats chipped.
I couldn't let them do it unless the cat was out for some procedure.
Those things are just so big!!!! They say cats take it better than dogs do - I figure it's probably just as painful but they don't whine like a dog would.

Yeah, they're HUGE. And when we first got Toonces she got 3 shots, blood drawn for her FeLV/FIV test, and a microchip. Poor thing got poked all over.

But really, none of our cats (we've had 8 microchipped in the last few years) acted any differently during the poke than they do with any other needle (ie no indication that it really hurts that much more). And IMO, it's well worth i for a premanant form of ID.

Incidently, in the even that they ever do get out (they're strictly indoor cats, but escapes do occsionally happen) and get picked up by someone who doesn't have access to a scanner, we got special collar tags engraved with:

their name
"Microchip ID#"
their actual ID number
The Home Again phone number

That way even if we move/change phone number/address the tags are still good. And the tags we got are the kind that lay flat against the collar so they're not dangling down where they can get caught on something (Boomerang tags)

with those tags, do you use breal away collars or regular ones? I'm always torn. I had used break away but I'd find it laying around the house so I'm guessing it comes off when Pathes scratches his neck.

 

We still use break away collars (tags won't do a lot of good if they're strangled). Ghost went through a phase a few weeks ago where he was slipping his collar off, but lately he's been keeping it on.

I happend to get a pic of Ghost where you can see his tag. I really do like these tags because they just clip onto the collar, but are guaranteed not to fall off (trust me, they won't fall off), and they don't dangle down & get caught on things.
