my cat - brando, has got this soft lump growing on his back. he's had this once before..it popped, released some pus, but then healed back to normal in little time at all. now, months later it's happening again. does anyone know what is going on with him? i can't find any relevant sounding diagnosis anywhere on the internet. thanks

Hi and welcome. :D It's most likely an abscess, but it could also be something else. You should take him to the vet, so they can drain it and put him on antibiotics. This won't cost you hundreds of dollars. If money is an issue, just take him to the vet. Have them diagnose what it is, then they can tell you the cost and you can decide from there what you want to do. Most Vets do take payment plans. An abscess is painful so it would be a good idea to get it treated a.s.a.p.

I agree with Chessmind take the guy to the vet and at least have it looked at and see how it can be resolved. Abscesses left untreated can get very large, painful, irritable for the cat not to mention can make them very sick. best to leave the diagnoses to the experts.
Best of luck. And welcome to the board!!

I would get it checked too but it could also be a sebacous (hope I spelled that right) cyst.
Those will also come to a head and break open. They are more common in dogs than cats.
When they break open the stuf that comes out looks like cottage cheese. Nasty stuff.
My dog gets them. She had one near her spine that broke open and, as the vet said, I kept taking the scab off it (this all sounds so gross) and squeezing the cottage cheese out and then cleaning it with an antiseptic cleanser. Eventually it just disappeared.
now she has two to replace that one.
I would get it checked though in case it is an abcess
