HELP***Need info on puppy pads

Hello Everyone
Has anyone ever used puppy pads to potty train their puppy, if so could you please share some tips or info. on how well they worked

Our Chi, Tubby Crack Crack, uses potty pads. She's too small to go outside, the big dogs wanna eat her. And no one is home (at my moms) to let her out during the day.

She trained REALLy easy. When we though she needed to go. We took her to her potty pad (we kept it in the SAME place) and put her on it... when she was done, we praised the dickens outta her and gave her a liver treat!

When she had accidents, we scouled her and crated her. Then when she came out and needed to go, it was back to the potty pad.


She's almost 1.5 yrs old now, and is great about going on them. Mom keeps a new one in the same spot as when we brought her home. It only took us about a week to potty train her.

She will go potty outside when they take her out, but with her little man complex, and wanting to fight with the BIG dogs, she tends to get snapped at alot...

 

THANKS I HAVE A ROTTIE PUP, AND I TAKE HIM OUT IN THE MORNING,NOON AND IN THE EVENING. HOWEVER DURING THE DAY I AM AT WORK SO I USE THE PADS FOR HIM, DO YOU THINK I AM CONFUSING HIM, AS TO WHERE TO DO HIS BUSINESS.

When I get older and have all the big dog out of my system --- I am going to have little dogs. I will litter box train them so I don't have to scour the yard for piles and worry about going out in the cold and snow.

I think litter box - or paper - training little dogs is the way to go for apartment dwellers and the elderly. It seems that it would be much cleaner and easier for everyone to clean a litter box or pick up papers once or twice a day rather than living with "accidents" on rugs and floors.

 

Not sure how it would work with a large breed dog...

I've never had any luck with litter boxes and the dogs. My mom wanted to try it with Tubby Crack Crack, but she wanted to play and dig in it rather than do her 'business"

 

You probably are confusing him, but if there is no choice then what can you do?

If you come home at noon, then soon he should be able to "hold it" while you are gone. Just crate him in a crate just big enough for him to stand up, turn around, and lie down, but no bigger. Then he will hold it until you are home to let him out.

Only do this if he is capable of waiting for as long as you are going to be gone, though. Otherwise you will force him to go potty in the crate, and that's not good! A good rule of thumb is that a puppy can hold it for as many hours as they are months old, plus one. For example, a 2 month old pup should be able to hold it for about 3 hours. Of course, it does depend on the individual puppy.
