help, neighbor's cat and thyroid medication

Hello, I usually post on the dog board but I have a kitty problem. A friend asked me to watch her cat while they are out of town. Her cat gets thyroid medication daily and since my cat gets heart medication twice a day she thought I could medicate her cat for her. But when I went over today, she hid from me and hissed when I tried to pick her up. I sat with her and talked to her and eventually was able to pick her up and cuddle her. But when I tried to give the medication, she spit it out and I couldn't get it back in her. I managed to catch her again later but she hissed at me and bit me when I tried to give her the medicine.

So, I am going to call her mommy tomorrow and ask if she can have treats, and if so I will try stuffing the medication in a treat. If she won't take it from me, I can leave it in her bowl since she is the only pet in the house.

Anyone else have any ideas? Anyone know how critical it is to miss thyroid medication?

Milk. She drinks milk. Maybe I can grind it up and put it in her milk?

well i dont know how critical thyroid meds are..but i always wrap my babies in a towel and hold their heads back and just drop the pill down..and massage their throats to help it down.

    Good luck!

I medicate my cat twice a day just fine. But I can't even catch this cat. She hides and she hisses at me if I try to reach out to her.

I hope this link helps. You've got to get her to an enclosed small room like the bathroom or a bedroom. Wear gloves and wrap her in a towel. Once you catch her. Try pilling again. Good luck! I have no idea how critical thyroid meds are but I'd imagine skipping the meds is definitely not a good idea. Can you get a pill plunger from a vet?

yeah, my cat Jazz is really skiddish around people she doesnt know..so maybe if you can get her in the bathroom (like vene said) and just sit w/ her for a bit..she will warm up to ya..

Success!! I stuffed her pill in a treat and she ate it right down. Hopefully her mommy is okay with her getting one treat a day. I used to use them with my cat until he started refusing them. After she ate the treat I managed to touch her a little but she stiffened up and then hissed at me when I got too close to her tail. Poor thing. She's all skin and bones because of the thyroid problem. I can't help but wonder if the medication dose needs to be adjusted.
