Help with Sevrums..

Can anybody tell how to tell the difference of the male and female

 

When they are young, it can be difficult. Usually you can wait and a group of 3 or 4 will pair off. The adult male has a longer anal fin (bottom fin) and is larger than the female.

Mine must both be females then. They are both about 3 inches long and the bottom fin is shorter than the tail fin on both. Thanks for the info

 

Also, A male has predominant red dots when they grow up on their head

 

That's right Raghu, the pattern almost looks like a web on their head.

 

I had 2 severums a golden and a turq. they were both males.

The yellows have almost Maori Tatoos on their faces - and red running through their tails and fins.

They are very beautiful fish and if their not sulking at the back of the tank because your on the internet at night they are rather amusing - mine used to do a jig when I went up to the tank to feed them.

I had 2 males - the only time that they rumbled was at feeding time - best thing to do I have found is purchase bird feeders the Ceramic ones - ensure that you buy a large and a small one - the severums love em because they can hide - its totally dark in there and if one is smaller then the other the larger bully cannot get in there to annoy it.

My turq. had it downpat feeding time - grab your hunk of tucker and dart into your birdhouse so the other cannot get you and eat at leisure all yellow could do was circle it looking bummed.

Its hard to find a female and they do all look the same in the tanks when little - but dont worry if you end up with 2 males they will not go as far as Oscars and actually bully to the death.

Lots of luck and buy a big tank - I had to sell mine because they got to big and I felt that I wasnt giving them what they needed to be happy.
