Our Australian sheppard/poodle mix has popping hips when he walks and will be having x-rays tomorrow morning. Have any of you had a dog that did not have hip dysplasia but just hips that pop? His rear end also slopes downward according to our vet. I will get more answers tomorrow morning. This poor pup has had pneumonia, earmites, ringworm and now has canine teeth that have erosion due to fevers at a young age. Stupid me..bought him from a pet store and I will NEVER do that again!!!

He will be 8 months old next week and weighs 52 LBS.

Your right to get x-rays done although the dog is still growing so depending on how bad the hips are (if it is HD) may mean doing more hip x-rays in about another year (if they are really bad then this wouldnt be necessary).
Hip dysplasia obviously is the most common reason for the hips popping out, other causes are trauma (like being hit by a car or a bad fall) and there is a disease that cause it but its not too common as afar as I know, it effect the muscles around the joint and interferes with the support of the joints.
What HD is, is either the ball socket or the femoral head does not develop properly so they dont 'fit' together the way they should. The low end is a common sign of it although the infection that they can get will cause weakening and paralysis...eventually it spreads to the front legs also.

my former dog, Sadie, a GSD from a BYB - when she was 3 months old we could hear her hips clicking when she walked. x-rays done when she was spayed showed extreme genetic hip dysplasia.
We treated her by keeping her weight down, keeping her physically active (within reason), lots of swimming.
    And buffered aspirin before/after exercise.
Good luck and be sure to let us know what the x-rays show

    hips popping from HD

My 4 yr old Golden's right hip pops. She was having difficulty getting up, squating to pee, stand on her hind legs, run, play, or move smoothly. I had the vet see her and she now gets Adequan shots once a month for her hip. I also give her a liquid with her evening meal that has: Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM, and Collagen -- joint juice, if you will. She also had a thyroid problem and that can exacerbate the joints, causing swelling and pain. She gets thyroid medicine, the Adequan shots, and the joint liquid. In a short period of time she has made such a turnaround it is hard to believe I am watching the same dog. She is back to her old, young, self! :)

If you are unable to keep her due to medical problems and the price to treat her, you may contact a rescue agency. They might could take her in.

I hope it works out where she can stay with you. Don't give up hope. After reading the previous posts, I'd say it is worth a try going with alternate treatment, as suggested.

HD is very common in most breeds and can be very painful to the dog.
If your vet is saying that his back has a slope downwards look you may want to have him x-ray the back aswell as this is an indication to spinal problems early detection means more effective treatment.

Please let us know how the little one is doing and i hope allhas gone well.
