Housebreaking 4 little dogs

I have 4 small dogs. A beagle, miniature poodle, miniature schnauzer and a small american eskimo. The poodle and the eskie are males and the other 2 are females. All have been spayed/neutered.

The ages range from 3 to 10 months.

All of them are pretty much trained to go on newspapers. The eskie, is the best trained about doing his business outside. He also knows that the papers in the kitchen are to go on. But every so often, I will catch him in our living room, hiking on the big screen television, on a the corner of the couch, sometimes the corner of the coffee table. It is always done when I am not in the room. We have a set of french doors in the living room that leads out to the deck and I can see in when I'm out there, and sometimes I will catch him doing this then.

But if I'm inside all day, I never see him going on anything but the papers or he lets me know it's time to go outside.

I try to take them all out about ever 2 hours or so. Then I will leave them out for a couple of hours and then back in. I would love to get a doggie door but our front yard is not fenced and we don't have the money right now to do that. Plus, our front door is steel, so I don't know if we'd be able to install one anyway, without replacing the door.

But then there is the miniature schnauzer. She almost always goes on the papers when she has to. And I have seen her go outside. But sometimes, if she's in all day (bad weather days), she will hold it all day until we go to bed. Then, in the middle of the night, she will go on the papers. And I can't just take her out on a leash and stay until she goes because she just doesn't go in front of you. Perhaps it's a privacy issue, I don't know.

Then the poodle, well he's the 10 month old. He has learned to use the papers to pee on, but he was use to a doggie door from his previous owner, so when he has to poop, he will just go in the living room, as close to the door as possible.

Like I said, I try to take them out every 2 hrs to let them go.

I guess to make a long story short, how do I get them to get off going on the newspapers and going just outside? I'm afraid if I just take up the papers all together, they'll go anywhere and everywhere.

I know it sounds like they do that already, but it's not that bad. I would say 85-90 % of the time, they go on the papers if they don't go outside.

And how do I stop the eskie and the poodle from hiking on furniture??? And the schnauzer, she's so unpredictable about when she has to go. The best behaved is the beagle. She ALWAYS goes on the paper if inside. Never have I caught her going on furniture or on the carpet in the living room.

Any suggestions? I have thought about crate training but I don't know if it's too late for the three. The schnauzer is an ex-puppy mill breeder, I would hate to stick her in a crate after her hard life experience. Would she regress and think back on where she came from?

The beagle does have a crate and loves it. She goes in it every night on her own.

I am not sure how the eskie would react. He is a very hyper dog, and just don't know how he would be in a crate.

Correction on housebreaking 4 little dogs post

I said the ages of my little dogs range from 3 to 10 months. I meant, 3 YEARS to 10 months. Just didn't want you all to think I had 4 little puppies.
