how do i tell if

my cat is long haired..short haired or medium haired...?

when we got Max, they said he is a domestic S H gray and white tabby.
but his fur seems to be longer than a short hair cat.
how do i tell?

Definately looks like a medium hair to me.

How old is your kitty? By the pic, he looks like a kitten. What I can see from the pic he is a medium hair. I have two short hair kitties. His hair looks a little longer than what my boys are.

He looks like a medium hair right now, but at only 5 months his fur still has time to grow! When my kitty Sherbert was a baby (he's 11months, now) he looked like a short hair, but as he's been getting older his fur has been getting longer, he's a big fluff ball now, definately a long hair, so even though your kitty is a medium hair now, remember that his fur may end up getting longer, his coat looks just like my Sherbert's at 5 months. Who knows? Sherbert's tail is bigger than he is!

By the way, your Max is absolutely ADORABLE! I love his eyes and paws!
