I just took my wonderful little golden retriever to be spayed. I was told she was 4wks pregnant. I know for a fact that she was in heat only 2 weeks ago. Is this possible? She is with me all the time and I just can't believe it! Also, shouldn't the vet have asked if we wanted to go through with things instead of terminating the puppies? I am just heartbroken.

If she was in heat 2weeks ago there is no way really that she could have been 4weeks pregnant unless she was mated in the first week of her cycle which is highly unlikely as most females will not stand for the male for nearly 2weeks.

Never underestimated a dog in heat as they will do anything to get to a male dog.

I think once the vet has opened her up then really there is not alot he can do as she may have lost the pups anyway due to being put to sleep for the operation plus the trauma her uterus would have had.

This is another reason it is always best to wait 12weeks after a heat cycle before having a dog spayed.

I know you are really upset and devastated but try and think of it this way atleast your little girl will not have the burden of a feeding litter, Suffering Mastitis, there is no risk of anything happening to her or her litter during the pregnancy or the birth.

I know how you feel one of my girls had to have a C- Section a couple of years ago and because she had 14pups the vet destroyed some and his excuse was there was to many for her to cope with he also said saved me the job of having to hand feed them aswell which would not have bothered me.

I am really sorry this has happened and i always thought vets did a check of the dog before spaying, I know mine checked one of my girls before she was spayed just to make sure there was no chance of her being pregnant but she needed to be spayed as they thought she may have had Pyometra.

Enjoy your girl and i again i am sorry this happened.
