Hi everyone, I have been reading alot of this forum today and it is so helpful. I have another question. I found out today that the Budgie we were given by a friend is very young. It is white with quite q bit of turquoise on it's chest. The cere is whitish bluish. Any way of telling if it is a male or female? Thanks again.

Young budgies generally have a purpely/pink cere until their first molt (usually around 4-5 months of age) and they will also have barring on their heads.

After their first molt there barring will disappear and they will have a plain cap.

As they get older their cere's will change color...

blue for males and pale blue, pinky blue or brown for females.

Hi budgies go through there first molt at 6months old this is the rpocess where they lose there baby feathers and gain there adult ones.

A young budgies will have barring on the head this excludes the lutino's and albino mutations.
They will also have a purple cere so all young birds resemble the female until after the first molt.

Depending on the colour mutation of the bird males will have a Blue,Purple/Pink coloured cere.
Females will have white purple/pink, Tan coloured ceres a female in breeding mode will have a very dark brown crusty looking cere.
