how would you handle a situation like this -

I work in a real estate office (I'm not a realtor...nor do I ever aspire to be one) and we have a mobile home, in a park, listed for sale. The owner is a young woman who got a puppy (shih tzu - yuck) she moved into an apartment and she claims she can only have one pet (a puppy?...I question that). Anyway last week we found out she left a cat behind in the moho. We called her and she said she needed a carrier in order to go pick up the cat - I offered to let her use one and left it at the office (I was on vacation last week). She hasn't picked up the cat. Yes she is feeding it and there are several litterboxes in the moho for the cat to use.

This cat is amazingly friendly - and lonely. When the realtors go to show the place the cat is sitting in the window silently meowing. He's been there alone for about a month - alone except when she decides to feed it.

I figured I'd call the shelter tomorrow and see if they would take the cat in (hard to tell since they are still overwhelmed with kittens), if they said yes I thought I'd give her a call and offer to take the cat to the shelter. Once the moho sells I have no idea what she is going to do with that cat.

I personally think she wants the new puppy more than the grownup cat.

Do you think this will work? Throw some ideas at me. She knows that it'll be me since she was pointed in my direction to help her rehome the cat. I refused to do it stating (to her) that I don't rehome if someone is just replacing an animal with another (let her learn a lesson)...but I will get the cat of what might end up being a bad situation if I can.

 

Some people can't be taught a lesson when it comes to responsibility for animals. I would contact the local humane society and see if they can take that cat since she has for all intents and purposed abandoned it. The best thing that could happen is for a shelter or rescue group to find a new home for the cat so it doesn't suffer b/c of it's owner stupidity.

That poor cat. I definately think it would be a good idea for you to call the shelter, see if they have room and give her a call. Otherwise, maybe you :wink: could foster this kitty until it can be rehomed or until there is room at the shelter? I hope you can find a solution. Keep us posted.

 

well i would not let her keep the cat..she obviously does not care for it any longer and prefers her new puppy...and honestly do not have a good feeling for what she would do w/ the cat if she is forced to remove if from the Moho....she may just toss him outdoors to fend for himself..i would get him to a shelter..or put an ad in the paper to see if someone wants him.

 

thats so sad. i mean is it really that hard to have a puppy and an adult cat? tell her if she wants to focus most of her attention onto the pup she can do that and still keep the cat instead of just dumping it. when i got kuma 2 years ago i didnt dream of ignoring my widdle pheobe one bit. shes too precious! id say just rehome the cat and teach her a lesson.

 

Me personaly I would tell the lady off- why would you choose 1 animal over the other. Tell her to make room for her kitty. If he's older then she must have had him awhile. Wouldn't she had gotten attached to it? HOw can she just leave it? Its also cruel just to leave him all lonely. It's soooo sad. I would take the kitty in and try to find it a home myself. Theres a small chance an older cat will find a home at a shelter. You may feel youre doing well by taking it to the shelter but you may just be shortening its time left. :cry: Take him in and talk to your friends. If anything you might fall in love with the baby!! HE sounds like an awesome kitty

 

I say find a home for the kitty without the lady knowing and say it ran out the door when you were showing it and you looked but couldn't find it. She doesn't sound like she'd care much if it ran away anyhow. Just less trips and $$$ to spend on a pet she doesn't want. Poor kitty. I hope you find him a good home.

 

The poor kitty deserves better than being with someone who doesn't care for it. I'd find a better home for this cat.

There are many animal rescue organizations, no-kill shelters, and animal sanctuaries out there. Noting that you live in New Hampshire(knowing the city would have narrowed it down ) so just using that and doing an Internet Search the following came up as to possibilitiessome will arrange transportation, some won't)

They say they are a no-kill shelter .

The above are just a few I was able to find entering the words " cat sanctuary+ new hampshire", " pet rescue+ your city+ your State" etc.

Humane Societies are overcrowed as it is. If there is a no-kill shelter or better still a cat sanctuary in your area it might give the cat a better chance. If a place is found now then when the motor home is sold there is an alternative that would be better than the local animal shelter.
