And I was actually hoping to have a little fun this weekend before all the homework starts to kick in now that classes have started. Grrr, oh well. So Vianne and I are holed up in the house today watching the weather and hoping the power doesn't go out. Poor cat's bored out of her mind. tsk tsk :m29:

    Hysterical picture!

Stay safe - and find something to do around the house (if you can find anything)!

Well I DID at least get out of classes today cuz they closed the college. I guess she wasn't too amused by what the weather man had to say, so she started getting a little neurotic and attacking her tail to keep herself busy, lol.

Luckily the storm turned south pretty quick and didn't turn out to be as bad as we expected. Nothin like last year, that's for sure!

We were lucky enough to only have to deal with Katrina as a cat 1 down here in South Florida, but now I see it has reached a scary cat 5, so for any of you who are in those gulf areas in the path of this beast of a storm, I'll be praying for you!! I'm so glad I got to see New Orleans for the first time last year, I hope it doesn't get washed away tomorrow :(

Great pics. I especially like the first one. :y_the_best: I've been tuning in to the hurricane as well. I don't have any friends or relatives in that area, but I certainly feel for all of the people and animals that are in harms way. It's just a monster of a hurricane. A lot of lives are going to be changed within a short amount of time. :(

I have been watching the news about it a lot since Sunday and it is a scary hurricane.

I don't know anyone in the region either but I also hope everyone there and their pets will be okay. Time will tell.

I saw on the news that they had six dolphins from the zoo that three were put in one swimming pool and three were put in another swimming pool at two different motels to help keep them safe. I makes me feel good to know that people are being sympathetic to animals needs.

Sorry, I was wrong about the dolphins being from the zoo. They were from some kind of marine life place.

yes i know what u mean i hate hurricaines.... i am happy that it turned south and missed us but i fell for all the ppl up that way that is gonna get it...my aunts in fort walton beach florida and said that it really isnt that bad there just tornado warnings... as bfar as everything else goes ive been wating the news since 8am today and seeing what a mess it is making up there and its just horrible... my heart goes out to them.. i went though charley but katrina was sooo much bigger them him....i just cant wait until hurricane season is over!!!!!
i do have to admit i love the beaches after these storms finding all the nice shells and helping the live ones back to the water...

u know all the houses that were flooded from katrina on the gulf coast i pray that no animals were trapped inside... if so i do hope that they did get out... i know after charley animal services found many tsray animals roaming around.. its heartbreaking to think that some ppl could just leave their pets behind.. i know that all the ppl on this board would never do that but there are some ppl out there that just do not care... i just hope everyone and everyones pets over there in all this mess are all ok...

There was a story on a news station last night about animals and the hurricane. There was an expert on talking about the devistating things that happen.

She said so many people leave their dogs tied up out back and obviously they don't make it because of the flood waters. That made me pretty sick to hear.

She said that as a last resort (as in, you can't take the animal with you - for whatever reason) - at least give them a fighting chance. Let them loose and pray they make it. It's better than them being trapped and having no chance, at all.

I thought that was interesting. I could never imagine myself in that situation. It's near impossible to think that I'd open my front door and say, good luck my little kitties, I hope you survive!

I agree, lucidity. If I had to leave my house and evacuate for any reason, my kitties would come with me.

It makes me tear up thinking that people can be so cruel to leave a pet tied up or to let them fend for themselves. They are dependent on us.

there are some ppl that do just get up and leave though..and not veen look back at their animals...i heard on the coverage of the aftermath ofkatrina that there were dead ppl and dead animals floating in the flood waters in new orleans...thats horrible!!!!!katrina was a nasty storm i feel soo bad for all the ppl that lost their homes and pretty much everything from this storm...i thought that charley was bad and didnt know what to do not having power for almost a week i couldnt imagine how these ppl feel..

as far as the whole evacuating.. i agree i cant just leave my babies to fend 4 themselves... during charley my 5 cats 2 birds and dog all went w/ me to animal services and rode out ther storm there...i do not remember a shelter open around here that allowed pets, and thats just dumb if u ask me but i dont make the rules sooo, but i know that u wouldnt see me there, the only place that was animal friendly was hotels and then u r lucky if u could find one...i do know that after all the storms last year i heard on the news that there were some ppl that were trying to make it to where u were able to take ur animals to shelters and that its just not right to leave them behind, as far as what happened w/ that i dunno....

I guess that is true that some shelters for people trying to retreat from the disaster do not accept animals. That would be so hard. You wouldn't find me there either but I guess some people have no choice. I can't imagine how people decide what to do. It is sad just thinking about it.

I have been watching it a lot on the news and this morning I told myself it is not good to be focusing so much on things I have no control over. All I can do is pray for them and donate what I can.

I know what you mean about the leaving animals behind. Last year I had to leave Vianne and my rats at my apartment while i went to a shelter with my ex-husband---twice. He's a k-9 deputy and i basically went to work with him during the hurricanes to where all the k-9 unit was stationed, so i couldnt take my cat because all the other dogs were there too so they wouldnt allow it. However, the 3 story apartment was a brand new building and very sturdy. We were on the second floor, so away from floods, and not on top if the roof lifted off. I put her in one of the bathrooms in the middle of the apartment with her bed, toys and automatic food and water bowls. I put the rat cages in the bathtub there with her, so at least she wasnt alone and there were no windows in the bathroom, but i can only imagine how awful the wind must have sounded. Luckily everybody was fine when i came back 2 days later.

I got pretty upset tho cuz my step kids mom left their 2 dogs running loose in the yard for the storm rather than put them in the bathroom cuz she didnt want them to go potty on the floor. I was upset becuz it was a very long slow moving hurricane and they didnt have adequate shelter outside. I know what rain feels like when its hitting you hard with a strong wind and feel like little stones hitting you, i can only imagine what it feels like outside in a hurricane. Luckily the dogs survived the storm, but the whole thing did upset me quite a bit, especially cuz my step daughter was so worried about them and kept asking if they would be ok.

I know around here there are shelters and vets offices that will board your pets in "hurricane proof" buildings, but you have to set everything up in advance, so they fill up fast and its hard to get it. Luckily I had a way to set up my animals in that bathroom and they were ok, but i realize not everyone has the same living situations. Thats why i think its important to think ahead on these things when you live in this kind of area and plan what you will do with your pets before the storm ever happens.

Now I am defintely glad that i got to go to New Orleans last October. Who knows if it will ever be the same again :(

That sounds so sad faeriedust. I'm glad everything turned out okay.

I have never been to New Orleans but have wanted to visit there. Guess that won't happen anytime soon.
