I have another stray

arrgggh. I am a magnet to loose dogs. yesterday morning my husband said there was a dog hanging around, I didnt find it, but then it showed up agian about half hour later, I put in in the backyard with the dogs :? He is an unalterd male, mostly choc lab with a docked tail :x , about a year old. a sweetheart of a dog, got along great with my dogs and cat, who put him in his place, dont think he has seen a cat before. his scent find the the thrown ball is incredible, My husband thinks someone may have been working with him on hunting/retreiving.
I am worried though, his fur looks funny on the haunches. hopefully its nothing and not contagous, he is very skinny, underweight he does have a collar and no tags, I have put up signs everywhere, I am going out of town this morning so I am dropping him off at the SPCA. If anyone calls I will tell them he is there.

If no-one claims him My husband has agreed to see if we could foster him, so will see if that is possible.

aww honeybear that is so sweet of you to take him in. I know the feeling a siamese kitty just adpoted me lol he is so cute i have signs everywhere also but no calls yet. so i guess i now have 5 cats :shock: and 2 yorkies lol

That's great that you're taking him in!
You know what I find odd? Whenever someone finds a stray, more often than not, their previous owner doesn't want the,. However when someone looses a pet, and wants them back, more often than not no one can find them. Maybe that's the case where I live, i don't know.

 

update, this is kind of weird, I got back into town yeasterday afternoon and they said someone just claimed him which was good, but we had no calls, so I dont know if he came from a long ways away and someone had been checking the shelter, but they do have cards on file for people reporting lost pets so they can match when one comes in. So I would think he would have been picked up right away.


Now my husband was telling everyone at work what a cool dog he was and it looked like he had some retreival training (like duck) and they are like wow, that dog would be worth a lot. I was wondering hmmm, did someone he told pick it up saying it was their dog, I always think these outragous things, but to me they would have to have checks and balances so people couldnt just go and claim a dog that didnt belong to them, right??

 

I had almost the same thing happen a few weeks ago. The neighbor called and said a big black dog was hanging around her house and that her dogs were going crazy. She asked if I would come down and get him and bring him down to our house so she could leave her dogs out. I said ok and went to get him he was such a sweetheart. I brought him down here and the neighbor said she called the county shelter and they would be out to get him in a little while. Something clicked with both me and my husband when we seen him. He was also uneuterd and very skinny and looked like fullblooded black lab. The shelter came and took him and all that weekend I thought about this dog and how skinny he was. I called the shelter that Monday morning as soon as they opened and told them that if noone clained him I wanted to adopt him. They took my name and number and said they had to hold him 7 days to see if anyone claimed him. On the seventh day I called and they said noone at all called about a black lab. The next day I went down and adopted him. Our shelter in our county is privatly funded so they only charge 15.00 to adopt them and you are responsible for all shots and neutering. They gave me a receipt of adoption and I immediatly headed for the vet. He is 100% fullblooded black lab my vet said(who has two of his own)about a year old and was about 20 pounds underweight. I had all his shots and scheduled an appointment for neutering. Well he has been with us two weeks and just had his stiches out the other day he has gained 10 pounds in two weeks and is very happy loving dog. He also loves to retrieve his squeaky toys and balls and is very very smart. He loves Tramp our other dog(golden retriever and irish wolfhound mix) and Tramp loves him. Tramp was also a stray and we adopted him about 7 yers ago and has been the light of our life. Now we have the Lab who we named Waylon who is also an excellent dog and another very bright spot in our life also.

I was so hoping the owner wouldnt claim him, just because he was so skinny (which could have been maybe he was out loose awhile, but he wasnt neutered, which he should be since he wasnt a purebred and I wanted to fatten him up and hopefully be able to help pick the prospective adoptees.

 

I hope the people that claimed him were truly his rightful owners. That is why I called and said I wanted to adopt the lab the neighbor turned in. I was scared since he was so skinny also people might think he was sickly or and make him live outside for his life and not give him the proper care he needed at the time. We are fattening him up and has gained 10 pounds in two weeks and about 10 to go then we will start leveling out his meal plan so he don't get overweight.. My vet and the technicians just love him. It was one of the best decisions I ever made was to call that morning to say I want him or who knows who he would of ended up with or the kind of life they would of gave him.
