    hello all,
i had a cat, 8 months old (Luna). she passed away 2 weeks ago. she had feline lukemia. i cried non stop for 3 days. i feel a little better now, and i am thinking of getting another cat because i cant stand the feeling of not having a cat in the house. i adopted Luna when she was 6 months old from an animal shelter.
the problem is that i dont know where to get the cat from. is there anyway i can garentee a healthy cat? even pet stores tell me that their kittens are from local people in the city and they are not sure who the father is. i really dont want to go through what happened with Luna again.
    :( plz help
    thank you

you could check to see if the shelter or rescue group tests prior to adoption. The rescue group I foster for does test for feline aids/leuk prior to accepting the cat into the program, my local shelter also tests for this.
Before you do adopt be sure to thoroughly clean your house...top to bottom and clean anything your kitten used that you might have a new one use with bleach...toys, litterpan, dishes, etc. Unless you have tossed hers and bought new.
But you should do a really thorough clean to be sure that diseases isn't lingering in your house.
But simply ask...do you test for and name the tests.

    thank you for replying..
i dont think they test them, but i will ask.
even if they do test, feline lukemia doesnt always show. i read somewhere that the cat could have it, but sometimes it would test negative...right?
the spca called me 2 weeks before Luna passed away and told me the her litter mate was tested positive for feline lukemia. so i went to the vet and we did a test, it was negative. 2 weeks later she started getting sick and we tested again..it was positive.
    what do u think?

maybe some info here that'll help. The only time I've ever been through feline leuk w/a cat was one I grew up with and she died from it. It was prior to the vaccine being available.
One thing you could do is see if the kitten's mother was an owner giveup...I would imagine that kittens born to feral mothers probably have a higher chance of having it than cats who were given up by owners. With the rescue group I foster for we get lots of owner giveups and try to get their health info. The 2 I have, for instance, were inside only cats from the day their owner adopted them. Most shelters will let you know if the kittens/cats were picked up as strays or giveups and if they have any history of vaccines. They have to keep these records on cats....
