I'm frustrated. I'm angry. I'm sad...

I went to Petco last night and looked at their cats. (The cats are supplied by the Animal Rescue League - a very trusted shelter).

There was one 7 year old cat - white with long hair and some black spots on him. I read his card and I can't stop worrying about him now. The card said he's been in the shelter for over two months and time is running out. If he doesn't get adopted SOON, he will not make it.

The card said he is such a sweet and wonderful cat and they don't understand why no one will adopt him. They mentioned that they receive 22 cats a day. 22 cats a day!!! How many of those do you think actually have a valid reason for giving up a cat?

This cat's story? Well, his owners moved. Did they think that when they dropped off the cat it would be a fairy tale ending? Did they realize this cat is going to DIE because they didn't want him anymore? Do they care?

I was up last night getting sick over all this. I can't adopt him. I really wish I could. He doesn't deserve what humans dished to him. He had no choice. And now he is going to die.

Please, say a prayer for this kitty, and all the kitties out there who are slated to meet their maker way too soon, without ever really knowing love. He doesn't deserve this fate and there's not a thing I can do about it.

Sorry, I'm just frustrated and want to help the cat.

I know how you feel. When I adopted Moe I could barely make it around the adoption room I was so upset. It was so hard picking just one of the 50-some cats that deserved a chance. Even after Moe got sick and then went psycho on me, I had to give her another chance. She had a difficult life and I could never just throw her away. People suck sometimes.

Can you help set up some sort of awareness campaign or even ask the shelter if you can be a companion for this guy? You know - get him out of his cage and play with him and show him love again? Or get his story circulated in the media/local community newspapers?

It's sad but true. I go to Petsmart all the time and I'm always sad when I leave the adoption section. There are so many unwanted cats. Most of them do read owners moved or abandoned. I wish I could adopt them all, but it's not realistic. Sometimes the alternative is better than getting locked up in cages, unwanted owners, or staying out in the wild. I sure hope some nice person adopts this guy soon. :(

it is so heartbreaking...the millions upon millions of animals that get put every year due to uncaring people. And the sad thing is these people probably got another cat at their new home

That is sad to see a poor kitty in a bad situation that he doesn't deserve. I understand your frustration.

I feel bad, also, when I go to these pet stores and see all the kitties that need homes. I wish I could save them all, too, but unfortunately I agree with other posters that it is unrealistic.

Too bad people aren't more responsible. Leaving a kitty behind just because you are moving is a poor excuse for abandoning a cat. I guess people just don't care or don't think what they are doing to the poor animal.

I understand, sometimes it in unavoidable that a cat must be given to a humane society but a lot of times, there is no good reason.

I hope this kitty finds a home.

Oh no Lucidity, that is so sad for the kitty, for all the ownerless kitties and for you as well to be feeling so rung out over it :( Will you be following up on it and find out if the kitty found a home?

I know how you feel too lucidity. I get so angry reading the poor excuses people have for giving up their pets. I wonder if his age has anything to do with him not getting adopted? 7yrs old does not seem that old to me but maybe to potential adopters it does. That poor cat...I sure hope he finds the home that he deserves.

I may try to follow up and see if the cat got adopted. But, I'm afraid to know. I've been asking everyone and anyone I know if they want a cat. But, I know so many people who already rescued too many cats as it is.

The news has actually been airing stories recently about shelters being loaded to capacity. I guess it's kitten season and the adults are getting overlooked.

The card on the cage said next to the cats age (7yrs) that cats can live to be 20. So, yes, I do think it's a problem for the little one. But, people need to realize that's not an old age. I have two seven year old boys and they are active, healthy, and full of life.

 so sad lucidity....i recently started volunteering at a place in phoenix called R.E.S.C.U.E. and it is private, non profit. the owners are wonderful. it is no kill. :m10: all the kitties have very clean environments to live in...some are in kitty condos, some have a whole room to themselves. everything is cleaned twice a day. the volunteer force is huge, so the kitties have alot of attention and care. they will live their life there, in good care, if they are not adopted.

it breaks my heart to see and hear things like this. they gave us some statistics like 700 animals are euthanized a week in phoenix. okay...i cant take that...that is just not right.

so for all the people who have animals not spayed and neutered...this is the result...there are not enough homes for the "cute little kittens" that turn into cats. and as for the people who abandon...or get rid of their animals because the are "moving????" @#$%# $%$%%^!!! i am not allowed to say it in the forum. it makes me furious..... :m3: :x

    lynnhaz,

That's wonderful that you volunteer!

I have been thinking about it and I'm trying to get my schedule worked out so I can.

I also started to look into the events the local shelters throw and maybe get involved with that.

I have tried to be careful here with the wording of how I feel in these situations. I also try not to be judgemental because 1% may have a valid story. After all, these shelters exist to help and make things better. I don't know how the employees can swallow all the crap they're shoveled with when taking in animals from uncaring people. They have to act respectful and kind to keep these animals ending up in a safe shelter rather than on some deserted road. Yet, these people who work in the shelters are animal lovers and want to help the innocent ones.

I have a ton of respect for those people who perform that balancing act. I don't know if I could keep my cool when some lady drops off her 2 year old cat because in reality that cat isn't a kitten anymore, but she says that they're not allowed cats where they live.

this is a tv spot that Porkpie Hat did for our local SPCA. It sure did create a whole lot of furor from animal lovers and those who didn't love them so much about comparing animals to children. Each time I see the ad it makes me cry, but I'm hoping it made a difference to at least ONE person who was about to abandon their animal.. it's a quicktime file and I'm sure you'll find it as heart-wrenching as I did.

I also understand those feelings. I get so sad when I think of all the unwanted pets out there. I get even madder because people don't spay/neuter their pets. It's so true that often when adopting, people will overlook the older cats and go for younger. These older ones deserve a loving home just as much. I hope people with room in their homes will remember this.

I have these 6 cats in one small apartment and can handle no more, but I wish so much I could save more cats. It's hard to see one needing a home and about to be put down and not be able to help. It just makes me cry.

More people need to realize how over crowded with unwanted pets these shelters and organizations are. If more people took time to realize and care, it would make a difference.

All of the unwanted cats out there have my thoughts and prayers.

    karen_80,

thanks for posting the video. It's very true (and I have no problem comparing kids with animals.) I thought the video drove home a great point. I wish it would get through to all the people who need to see that ad.

lynnhaz, there's nothing disturbing to watch in the video. It's sad, but not graphic or anything. There actually aren't any animals shown in the video at all. You should give it a watch.

I just watched the video posted by karen_80. It brought tears to my eyes.

Animals are a lot like children in that they can't speak for themselves. So we have to speak for them.

Oh, I forgot to ask. Have you heard anything about the kitty at Petco, lucidity03?
