I'm worried about Socks

Socks has had a couple of bouts of UTI's the last couple of years which were treated with antibiotics.

Even after the last episode, I noticed a couple of drops of urine occassionally next to the litter. I thought she was just being lazy and sloppy (she is not the most neatest cat).

This morning I noticed a brown spot on my bedspread and figure it is Sock's doings and now I think she has another UTI. She has a regular Vet's appointment tomorrow so I will ask her about this.

I am wondering if anyone knows of a good website that addresses this problem? I did a search but couldn't find out very much. Also, does anyone else have a kitty with UTI as a chronic problem? What do you do about it? What happens when it becomes a chronic problem?

I have gone through this for many years with my dog - your vet might (and probably should) have you switch foods. The Prescription Diets are good for this - I know many people don't like Science Diet regular foods but their prescription foods are formulated for specific health issues and aren't in the same realm as their normal diets.

The darkish colored pee could actually be blood in the urine. Hopefully there are no stones/crystals developing. After the UTIs and the round of antibiotics are gone does your vet have you do another urinalysis? Once the antibiotics are out of the system the urine should be tested again to be sure it's remaining clear.

Best of luck....my dog has been UTI and stone free for nearly 2 years on the CD prescription foods and she was also chronic

Mary would remedies like concentrated cranberries help out kitties with uti's?

Thanks for your website suggestions Vene, and for your advice Mary_NH.

We'll see what the Vet says tomorrow. The Vet did not take any tests after her course of antibiotics before, but I will check into that, too. Also about the food, too. Thanks again.

cats respond better to cranberry supplements better than dogs do (according to the holistic vet I used to take my dog too). I asked her about cranberry for Sadie and she said most dogs do not respond well - although many do. So I asked about cats and she said yes cats respond quite well to cranberry supplements - so as vene suggested that is also a course you might want to consider. For a cat you'd probably want to give pill form as I'm not sure you would get a cat to drink up cranberry juice.

Best of luck - I've lived with this for 10 years with Sadie dawg as I mentioned and it can be very frustrating...but followup after the antibiotics have run their course is very important cause if the infection isn't sufficiently dealt with it only comes back with a vengeance.

Well, Socks and Mittens had their Vet appointment. They were not happy campers, but got through it okay.

Mittens is fine. Socks is going to go on another round of antibiotics for UTI.
She had some fecal matter stuck to her fur under her tail. This is what happened before. We try to shave her once in awhile to keep her clean under her tail but maybe we're not doing it often enough. The Vet gave her a good shaving.

The Vet also said that chubby kitties sometimes have a hard time reaching back that far to clean themseslves. I'm going to have to be more diligent in keeping an eye on Socks and try to keep her better groomed under her tail.

The Vet also suggested mixing dry food for overweight cats with her regular food to help he to lose a little weight. Maybe I'll try that.
