I have had parakeets all my life. Always one single parakeet. The problem I am faced with is something I never dreamed of. My bird is named Harry, and is approx. 7 years old. This spring Harry started chewing up her gravel paper, which alarmed me. I thought that it appeared that she was creating a nest. Lo and behod she starts laying eggs. 5 of them. I read a post in a newsgroup that said when this happens just let the bird alone and she will get bored and abandon the eggs. That was true, eventually she started breaking them, so I removed them. Almost immediately, she started chewing the gravel paper, and produced 7 more eggs. Again she started breaking them after a few weeks, so I removed them. Well, she's chewing the gravel paper again, I think I know what follows. My question is twofold. #1) Why would a lone female produce eggs? #2) When will it stop?

A female bird will produce eggs all the time if allowed but this is unhealthy and can lead to a calcium deficency so its best to try and stop her doing it.

The best way to help stop is to change her toys around in the cage, Move her cage to a different part of the room or to a different room, Reduce the amount of light she has per day and remove anything that she could use as a nest box.
Moving things around and changing what she is used to will unsettle her and an unsettled hen will not lay eggs at the risk of something happening to them...

Also you will need to make sure she has plenty of cuttlefish as she is losing calcium with every clutch of eggs she is laying.

Good luck and hope this will help you to stop her
