 It's about one of our fosters, and I'm starting to get that horrible helpless feeling!!! I just don't know what to do to help this baby anymore!!! Here's the long story:

We pulled Freija out of a filthy vet office in Marion, Alabama on August 13th... Yes I know it was Friday the 13th and it shows!!! Y'all, you wouldn't believe that place!!! The office, the operating room and the kennels were absolutely filthy, and the guy that called himself a vet came out of the back area chewing tobacco while speaking to us!!!! :m3: Anyway, they did not do any HW test on her, but they gave her Heartguard, saying that if they're not infected, they usually survive (!!!!!!????) That enraged me even more, as you can well imagine!!! They had already spayed her, unfortunately, and I say unfortunately because afterwards, her surgery got infencted, so we had to have our vet clean it up and put her on antibiotics.

Anyway, we took her to our vet, and after doing ALL the tests, she came out HW+, hookworm and whipworm positive, full of fleas and ticks, the whole nine yards...

We gave her all the routine shots, she got treated for all the parasites (minus HW - she will start that ONLY after we get rid of this diarrhea, and she gains some more weight) . So herein lies the problem. THE DIARRHEA!!!!

No matter what kind of pills and shots the vet gave to her, it still seems to have no effect.. This poor baby just won't stop having this watery stool. And we gave her sooo many pills and medications it's not even funny anymore!!!

Other than having this diarrhea, she is very playful, eats very well (in fact she gained 5 pounds since we got her), she is not lethargic or drowsy, or strenghtless...

Please somebody help me help her, and give me some ideas as to what this could be???!!! :( :(

Have you tried giving her some canned pumpkin to see if it helps? You can also try probiotics to repopulate the good bacteria after the antibiotics have wiped them all out. I think rice is supposed to firm them up as well.

plain yogurt has a bacteria in it that is kind to bellies. Also have you tried the fasting approach? Nothing but either boiled burger (a good quality burger) or boiled chicken with white rice (cooked) for 48 hours?

    Raw diet??? That should help?

Or lots and lots of Cheese!!! I know, joking. But gotta lighten it up a bit!

ANyhow, on a serious note. I would try the yogurt aproach as well. I know it helped Little Jamiya out when she got a deal of dir' rear.

The vet also tld me to feed her some boiled rice. THat along with the yogurt seemed to help.

SOme dog foods are just very unkind to the stomach. COuld switching her to raw help??

Thanks for the ideas, guys! I'll try first the rice, pumpkin seeds and yogurt diet, and then I'll switch her to raw. I'll let you know what happens. Please pray it works!!! She is such a good and beautiful little lady!!!!

Not pumpkin seeds - just canned pumpkin!

I'll add this although it probably isn't much help. I had a similar issue with my older dog awhile back. She was getting Pedigree can food and then I found this site and started researching dog foods so I decided to change her. I switched her slowly onto dry food. I expected some diarrhea while she was getting used to the food but it lasted for a month or more. I changed her foods several times (all the top brands) and the diarrhea remained. I took her to the vet and he gave her different meds, I also did the boiled chicken thing. None of it helped, she had the diarrhea for months. When I put her back on canned food, finally, the diarrhea subsided. Her poop still wasn't normal until I had to put her back on her beloved Pedigree can food (she refused to eat anything else).

So, I guess my point is, it could be the food you are feeding her. I guess you could either go raw or just try her on different foods until you find one that works for her system.

Jamiya, for some reason I thought you meant pumpkin seeds. I remember somebody else made once a remark about that. O.K.... so it's the canned pumpkin... Where do you get this stuff? Is it the grocery store?

Elizavixen, I feed all of mine (nine with the fosters now!!!!!) Science Diet.
All of the others are doing O.K.... but I guess her tummy just doesn't like it. Considering the bad shape she was in when we got her, I doubt it she EVER had any dog food... ANY kind of dog food for that matter :x I do believe they just used to throw some table scraps for her wherever they kept her (the huge caluses on her front elbows and her damaged teeth tell the story of some rough surface, tied to a chain :x :x )

I'll try anything to make her tummy feel better!!!

Are you sure she was treated for the whip worms? Because my dog had the same thing as a puppy- constant diarriah-- we tried everything, and the vet prescribed a bunch of stuff. Finally, I did my own research and asked for Albon, and after just a couple weeks on that- she was 110% better!

    Para-Cleanse
works great have been using it for more then 10 years. It helps clear up diarrhea for my guys we also add Missing Link to there food.
I also give my guys brown rice if they are having any problems and plenty of water on hand. Black Walnut for heart worm and other worms is also very good. My guys just got done with there two weeks on now two weeks off and re-start.

Yes, you can get canned pumpkin from the grocery store. I assume it is the stuff you use to make pumpkin pie, although check the ingredients to make sure there is nothing else in there.

How is she doing now? Any better?

 After switching her to BARF plus the pumpkin, plus the rice, plus the crackers, she still has this diarrhea, so today we got her back to the vet. They re-checked her for everything possible - she is parasite-free (except for HW - but that's another story). No worms of any kind, no giardia, no coccidia, no nothing. They're holding her there tonight to run some more blood tests tomorrow morning. I pray to God they find out what's wrong with her... we love her so much we are seriously considering keeping her!!!

Switching foods a lot can also cause diarrhea (and so can the stress of a new home). If they can't find anything wrong with her, you might just let her settle in for a while.

:!: Only tomorrow will we be able to take Freija back home. The vet finally found out what is wrong with her. Malabsorption Syndrome. She is still on a little medication, and she was swithed to a prescription diet - my vet is giving her Purina One E N . She will have to stay on this diet for the rest of her life, but if this will make her healthy, then so be it!!!!
I would appreciate it if somebody could give me some more links to better understand this syndrome (the ones I could find were not very in depth), and possibly other prescription food for this other than Purina??
Thanks guys, I know you're the best, I always rely on your help!!! :bow_now:

This is a different diet and has some more info, although I didn't read through it all: http://www.walthamusa.com/Learning Center/LF20.html.

The food itself doesn't look impressive - meat by-products, corn, rice, etc. I don't know what other alternatives there are, but I think that page told you what to look for in a food. You could also call the major brands you are interested in and ask them if they have an appropriate food for this condition.
