Introduction of new puppy - how long until they're friends?

I have a 1 year old Japanese Chin male who is neutered. Yesterday, we just picked up a 20 week old female Japanese Chin and introduced them on neutral territory and they sniffed each other out and didnt have any problems so we brought them home.

Once home the female puppy sniffed around the house and didnt have a single problem at all. She even wanted to go up to our 1 year old and play but he didnt want to have one thing to do with her and he'd scurry away. If they were both put on our bed he'd jump off and take off. He's not aggressive in any way but wants NOTHING to do with her.

We're giving him special attention and alone time with us to try to help his anxiety of being replaced too.

During the day when we're working she is kenneled and he is leashed to the kitchen table so they are both in the same room (they can go nose to nose if they want) but both are separated so I'm hoping that will introduce them slowly.

Are we going about this right? How long until they become friends and our original dog doesnt act afraid of the puppy? I feel bad, almost like we betrayed his love because of the dejected looks he was giving us last night :(

It sounds to me like you have done a great job so far. It may take some time for your little guy to accept the" intruder" into the pack. Good luck and please post pictures of your babies!

Just make sure to give him enough slack to move around and make sure there is nothing in the way for him to get caught on!

Dont worry. We remove all of the kitchen chairs and this is the way he's been for months during the day while we're at work (until 2:30).

Just a little update: Harley will at least be in the same room as the puppy now but still wont have anything to do with her. Hey, thats progress from the night before when he wouldnt even be in the same room :)
I give it at least a week until he's comfortable with her being around.

When we got our Great Dane pup (six weeks ago) our Boxer wanted nothing to do with him, and acted the same way Harley is. Now, just recently, she is actually playing with the pup! It took her nearly six weeks, so give it time. The older dog is probably feeling a bit jealous and left out, so make sure you always pet the older dog first, and give him more attention than the pup so he won't feel he's being pushed out. Give him extra treats now and then so he'll feel special. I would bet you that within a few weeks they will be playing together. Just be patient.
