My cats meow sounds like a frog croaking. Everytime I hear it, I think its a frog! Is this normal?

We have a house cat at the vet, and both she and her sister (who the vet owns) sound like they are croaking. I have never figured out why, but it doesn't seem to bother the cats.

Is it a recent thing? Pumpkin had a beautiful voice until she ate a sickly bird. A few years ago we let her out in the yard for barely 2 minutes and she had feathers sticking out of her mouth. Then she developed sores around her mouth, lost her speech for a couple of weeks and her voice when it came back was very hoarse and she sounds like a frog to this day. Monty, on the other hand, does not know how to meow. He barks like a dog. I think it was because he was a stray kitten, and that his mom never taught him any socialization skills. Are your kitties siblings?

I dont know Shastas history, she is a stray that adopted us a few months back so he could have damaged his vocal cords. Its a very faint croak. Unlike Midas who had a boistrous meow that would shake the walls! Funny about the barking is that really true?

Ghost doesn't have a normal meow either. His meow sounds more like the mewl of little lion cubs or like a really sick, dieing lamb with laryngitis. He's a british shorthair and from what I've read that's normal for them.

One of these days I need to get a recording of it.

I'd say one of five meows is slightly normal. The rest sound like a bark. It's very brief and sounds like a puppy barking, lol. He also likes to sit or sleep by our feet which makes him like a guard cat/dog, lol. I don't know. Sometimes I think he talks like a person as well. He'll do that when he's mad at the other kitties and it sounds like he's cursing. Chelle, I'd love to hear the recording when you get a chance.

I've had different kitties with different sounding meows. I guess there could be different reasons.
