Birds do not come into heat, They have a breeding cycle but, which means when the female is ready she will start making funny sounds to atract males and will usually bow her front end and lift her rear to show she is ready.

If a female is ready from breeding the male will show his interest by bobbing up and down and singing to her.
There are no other signs she is ready apart from the singing and, bobbing and her body actions.

Just one other question.... why do they try to bite when you mean no harm?

In the wild birds only defence is its beak, so if you goto grab them or go to fast to them they feel threatened and will bite to warn you off.

Birds also nibble your hands to taste as they will remember that taste and if its something that makes them uneasey or makes them feel threatened next time it goes near them they will bite.
