Itchy budgie

I have a 3 yr. old budgie and just lately he's started scratching his head all the time. He uses his cage bars and his perch to scratch it and last night when I changed his cage I noticed little marks where it seems he's rubbed it raw. I thought maybe he has mites but I didn't notice anything in the bottom of his cage after I changed it. Any suggestions on what it might be or what I can do to relieve the little guy's itch???

Hi sometimes when birds are molting they become itchy and they find relief in scratching there heads on the bars perches and even scratching with there feet.
You may want to get him checked by an avian vet just to make sure there is no underlying problem like mites that maybe causing this.
