My Mom's pom Sioux-Zee and her brother are staying with me while my Mom is up at Emory Hospital with my Dad. Anyway, Sioux-Zee has been chewing her tail the whole time she's been here. She's also blowing her coat, so I started brushing her a little while ago. I found a huge scab at the base of her tail and her whole tail is raw. The tip was even bleeding a little. I brushed at the flaky stuff, cut out a big mat/scab, cleaned it and then put some hydrocortisone spray for dogs on it. Is there anything else I can do right now? Benadryl maybe?? I don't think she's ever had any and I don't remember the dosage. She still keeps looking back there like she wants to chew, but right now seems pretty comfortable.

Sounds like a hot-spot, doesn't it? Does she need a vet visit Monday?

Poor girl. :( I think I'll let her sleep with me for "observation". I know she misses Mom and Dad. I bet that added to her obsessive licking and chewing.

Oh BTW, I personally put advantage on her about 2 weeks ago. :?

my parents shit zu just just started the same thing, never had this problem before and she is 8. it could be just a raw spot, she has chewed. Hot spots get huge in a matter of a few days, but I owuld get her to the vet and check it outl, Do you think she is nervouse not being home or something in your environment is causing it?

She was chewing before she got to my house. All the activity here seemed to distract her and I was putting the spray on her. She's back at Mom's and she said she may be chewing a little but it's not bleeding. I'm gonna check her out though.

I was wondering about a coat supplement. What do you give Jake, Honeybears?

Wild fish oil is a really good supplement to keep the coat healthy. I feed gel-caps that you can buy just about anywhere. Sometimes I get wild fish oil and sometimes wild salmon oil, but either way you want it to be from wild cold-water fish of some sort. :)

Thanks Jamiya! Mom's not really good about following directions about supplements so I'm not real sure what to do about that...I got her to switch them to a better food and she's still mixing it with the old stuff--after a month! I have to go get the new food for them myself too! So I guess I'll have to get the supplements for them too.
