Hi all I just picked up a 40 gallon and was wondering If it is big enough for my dempsey and my convict they are both about 3 to 4 inches and they have been together since they where babies I am just wondering becouse if not I havce the option to buy another 55 gallon really cheap if they will not fit in the forty then how many africans could I get in there thanks to all

Personally, I would get the 55 and put the JD in it and put the con and maybe one other smallish cichlid (ie firemouth, acara, or another con) in the 40. It's really not big enough for both fish.

And I wouldn't put africans with either of them because african rift lake cichlids require totally different water conditions. But to answer your question, assuming it was just africans and no other fish and depending on the species of africans, you could fit around 8 - 10 in the 40 and 10 - 12 in the 55.

I have 2 JD's in a 55gallon, alot of people who have kept jds say 30g long for one which i agree with. anyways...the JD and con might fight in the 40g as they grow. mine cons/jd didnt get along at all.. :(

Let me put it this way. My oscar is 8 1/2" which is about he size of a SMALL adult JD. I wouldn't dream of trying to keep her in a 30 gallon. Not only would that be WAY too much bioload for a 30 gallon (you'd likely be doing water changes twice a week), she wouldn't have much swimming room.

    36 x 12 x 16

So it would be like this:
