    Hello All,

I have been monitoring a few adoptions sites in my area, waiting for a small dog to be available, with a good temperment, etc. Well, I came accross this guy yesterday. He looks so adorable, but I do have concerns about him being a JRT, as I know some of them can be extremely HYPER!
I have some friends that have one, and she is only hyper when she knows it is time to play. So I guess as with any undesireable behaviour, it can be managed. Does any one have any thought or advice on a male (not fixed) JRT one year old, and a female 1 year old shih tzu getting a long. They wold be both me crated when alone, and I would get the boy fixed asap.

    THought?

Oh, please take a look at him

    Thanks!

I cant really say cuz I dont know how your dog is with other dogs.
I have a one year old shih poo who luvs all other dogs and if your i year old shih tzu is the same I think it could work. But most shelters you can bring your dog to meet the other before making things final. Not really sure though cuz Ive neva had two dogs b4 But I think it would work.

I would definitely take your dog to meet him in a neutral place before you make a decision.

JRT's are unbelievably smart. They have to have enough exercise and stimulation or they will invent it on their own. My cousin's JRT only gets hyper when it is time to play too. He is the coolest dog, they have amazing personalities. They say in the description that he is a calm boy, but he has probably also been scared there. He is a doll baby though, are you or is anyone else home during the day for him?

When I got Rusty I found a book called "Jack Russell Terriers for Dummies"--- It's a very good book, and has some chapters for people to read BEFORE they get a JRT. There are also JRT websites about the same thing, JRT rescue sites have a lot of info for people to consider before getting one also.

I've known some JRT to be very docile dogs as well.
I would suggest taking them to meet each other in a neutral area. See how they interact, and if all goes well. See fi they won't let you have a trial period. Most rescues will. Take him home over the weekend and see how things pan out. If all goes well, then make the decision to adopt.

A friend of mine has a JRT he got as a pup.... and for the first couple of years, he was quite a handful......he has since moved to the east coast, but from what I understand the dog has really mellowed out with age. So maybe it just takes time and maturity.

...and a good old-fashioned tranquilizer gun. "Get the net, Jim!!" (Anyone remember the old Wild Kingdom show??)

Ummm, okay I'll shut up now.

Oh, yeah.... I always watched wild kingdom too! What I loved is how Marlin Perkins (the old guy AND the boss!) would always go along on the chase and all, nararating and describing the whole adventure.... but when it would come time for the confrontation, you would always hear him say in the nararation something like "Now.... as Jim approaches the raging, angry bull rhino with the net in an attempt to capture the beautiful beast, I will wait back here in the copter in case we need to get out of here fast!.".... poor Jim... he was big, buff, and courageous.... he always got sent in while Marlin "observed" from a safe spot!

    Hi All,

thanks for the words of wisdom!
The rescue is having an adoption fair tomorrow morning, at a community centre. I am going to take Abbey and they have told me there is a park setting there and the 2 pups can meet on neutral ground. One of the staff will accompany us.
I will let you all know how it goes. Keep your fingers crossed!

Boy, that pup you're thinking about adopting reminds me a lot of Rusty... just take that dog and cross it with a mini dachshund, and I'm sure you'd have more Rusty's! Anyway, good luck with the try out. My mom has a Llhasa Apso named Odie..... him and Rusty are best buddies. So I bet as long as Jack doesn't have any major issues from his past, they will get along fine

And Smokey hasn't calmed one bit either!

Wylie definately has heeler in her.....that would explain the energy!

As someone said to me upon seeing our brand new baby JRT, "You know, there are support groups for folks like you."
