I found this in Whole Dog Journal and thought I'd pass it on for those of you who feed kibble:

shoot Jaimya i had no idea of that i have rubber maid containers for the dogs and cats food i had mice at one point so i put it in containers and it's easier then picking up a huge bag and dumping it in a bowl well i will have to look into different containers i guess

    thanks for the info

Are the only reasons to put kibble in a container to prevent pest and rodent contamination?

Just wondering b/c I don't put my kibble in a container - just keep it in its bag in the dining room. I go through kibble quickly (about every 2-3 wks or so) so there are no infestation problems.

I put it in a container because it is easier to scoop, it looks nicer than the bag, dogs and cats can't rip into the bag to get the food out, and I figured putting it in a sealed container would keep it fresher than just folding over the top of a bag. I buy 18-pound bags for the cats and it takes months for them to eat that much. And their food is in the basement where we do have mice sometimes. And I have kibble for the dogs that I use as training treats. It is leftover from when I started feeding raw, which would be around January or so. I can't imagine kibble in a wadded up bag would still be fresh.

My containers are from PetsMart and specifically made for pet food, but they don't say anything on the label about being food quality plastic. Maybe from now on I should cut the top off the bag and put the whole bag in the container? I would probably need a bigger cat food container to do that.

And the mouse food I store in a butter tub because of convenience - easier to scoop and no annoying zip-loc thingies to seal every night.

    Very interesting, thanks for sharing.
I buy the small bags so the cat food only lasts me about a week and the dog food lasts about 2wks. I keep it in a cabinet so they can't get at it.

Hmm thanks for posting. I keep mine in a rubbermaid since I but it once a month I get the big bag. I guess I will just keep it in the original bag but put it in the container.

How can we tell if its safe plastic. I have two twenty lb containers. I only buy food about every 4 months, I think.

I guess the only way to tell is if it says on the label or if there is a phone number you can call and ask.

2-3 weeks!! I wish mine lasted that long!!!!

Sadly enough, I go through a 50lb bag of food in about 3 days!!! Ugh....makes me feel bad!

Then again, there are lots of hungry mouths to feed!!
I've got 8 total now!!! SOooo its been taking alot of my time.
