Kitten Biting

Say... i know it's bad to allow puppies to bite and mouth things.... what about kittens.

i'm wondering if i should be trying to get Raz to stop biting so much--or if it's just a kitten thing and they grow out of it.

Razberry is here playing under my computer chair and he learned how to pull himself up by standing on the wheelie bar things.. i got off to looka t him and he was (i dont know how) totally upsidedown attatched to the bottom of the chair!!

now my toes have nowhere to be safe. :shock:

 

Yep, not all kittens are bitters, but a lot are. Pooky(RIP) always bit and scratched us, Rene bit and clawed our ankles when we went on the computer a few months ago. Thank goodness she outgrew that. We would toss her mice or play mice attached to a fishing pole when she's naughty and want attention. Give him a mouse or a stuffed animal to attack (look at Footsie's pic on Catster) when he's in a biting mood. Your descriptions of Raz are so funny! It's like I'm reading manga! :0023:

 

Hi. You know what's always worked for me to keep kittens from biting? As soon as they bite too hard or are playing too rough with me, I just blow air into their face and say 'OUCH.' Kittens/cats just don't like this at all. If you are consistent and do it each and every time it does work. I trained my previous cat Handsome this way, as well as my two kittens Romeo and Juliet. Kittens learn to play fight with each other and they also teach other what is too rough, by letting out a loud meow.

So i'm gathering i should start teaching that biting me is bad. Gottcha. i like the poofing idea chessmind! i shall start to practice that as well.

I agree with the stuffed animal. Worked wonders for me. (Thanks for the plug Vene to the pic. The www button at the bottom of my posts goes to Footsie's catster page so you can see him with his stuffed animal).

Footsie didn't respond well to blowing in his face. It makes him mad and he stops playing and starts really attacking!

I think having a second cat around will help Raz, they seem to learn a lot from eachother.

 

EternalFlame, it's not that biting is a bad thing, it's when they bite too hard that they need to learn that's it's not okay. It's so much easier if you can train them as kittens to not be too rough with us.

Footsie, I laughed so hard when I read that. Only because I remember how you tried this method and it did not work at all for Footsie. I was also picturing the pic you posted of Footsie's 'love nip' (jaw wide open showing his teeth). LOL.

Another method of telling a cat that they are biting too hard, is to say a firm 'OUCH' or 'NO' and tap the cat's nose gently with two fingers. If blowing in their face or gently tapping on their nose does not work, then you have to just walk away and let them know you are not going to play with them if they get this rough. You could also go and get a stuffed animal for them to play rough with. The only problem with this, is that I'm not sure if the cat would understand that he got the stuffed animal, because he was being too rough. Perhaps if it's done in order, they might understand. Meaning you did the loud 'OUCH' followed by blowing air or tapping on the nose and then walking away and giving them the stuffed animal. I just think it's important that they do learn to not be too rough. Every cat is so different and there are so many good and positive ways to train kittens and cats. You just have to find a method that works well for your individual kitty.

i've started a combination of puffing with a stern NO or AHH-AHH.. and that has worked! Just since i posted the first thread in here and got your guys' ideas.

He'll stop biting hard, and tone it down to soft little mouthing or even licking. then i praise him heavily with nuzzlings and soft pettings.

if he's really in little demon mode- and i'm puffing till i'm dizzy and talking to a wall, i whip out a toy for him and let him go to town on that.

OH-Oh! he was exceptionally calm and loving before we got up this morning after our little 'no biting' session and he let me gently rub over his sockets with my thumb while i praised him gently. My figuring is if i can keep doing it, and have him allow me.. then cleaning his eyes with a damp tissue for the gunk wont be a fight!
