Kyrre and I are moving...

After a long period of soulsearching and brainstorming I have decided to leave my boyfriend (that's why I haven't been very active on the board lately, I've had too much on my mind). We've been together for five years and lived together for the past three years, but now this feels like the only right thing to do. We are still very good friends though :)

So now me and a friend are going to move in together (it's too expencive to live alone..) and Kyrre is coming with me. The thing is, the apartment we'll be renting is on the third floor and the building is in the center of the city. So Kyrre, king of the outdoors, now has to become an indoor kitty... :?

Any suggestions on how to make this easier on him? It's a pretty big apartment: 100 squaremetres, with a big "glass veranda" (the veranda has glass walls and ceiling, can't remember what it's called. Maybe winter garden?) I was thinking of buying a big cat condo to put out there, so that he'll have a great wiew. Do you think that would help, or would it just make him want to go outside even more?

I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to make the move and the new lifestyle easier for him :)

I'm sorry about your breakup. These things are hard, but can also be very positive over time.

The cat condo sounds like a great idea. I'm sure he'll adjust, it'll just take some time. When do you move?

The kitty condo sounds like a good idea, and I think he'll adjust eventually, perhaps you could even get him a leash and harness and take him outside sometimes. Just a warning, though I'm sure you've experienced this: the outdoor kitty that attacks indoors. When my kitty can't be let outside for whatever reason, like on Halloween and New Years and stuff, she FREAKS OUT! After about 1/2 hr she accepts that she will not be going outside, so, all of the energy that would have been used to climb trees and chase poor little critters is used to climb chairs and couches and chase poor little me, lol. This is the only time she ever uses her claws to play with me, so I would be ready to help your kitty use up some of his energy indoors without you being the primary target of "attack."

Hey girl, I'm so sorry to hear about your break up but I'm glad it's amiable. My first husband and I split up after 7 years and it was friendly and to this day (25+years later), we still keep in touch.

I think Kyrre will be fine. He won't be pleased and WILL turn into a door darter (most likely). I think he's really going to enjoy that big window and a good condo will definitely help. Booger loves sitting in a screened window and that helps so I open the window for her everytime the weather permits.

You could try the leash idea but not many cats take well to them. Are there any parks in the area you're moving to? You could take him to a park on a long leash and let him run about.

Hugs to you and Kyrre and I hope your move is smooth.

I'll probably start moving 02/01, as soon as we sign the contract.

There is a small park behind the city hall I could take him to. But I guess we'll have to use quite some time practising on wearing the leash first

lol, I guess I have to spend alot more time activating him once we move. He has a lot of energy, you should see him when he's outside: running like he was a race horse

Good luck with the move. I'm sure Kyrre will adjust with time. Cat condos, cat trees, window perches, and leashes are great ideas to keep Kyrre happy. :m10:

So sorry about your break-up but sounds like you have thought it out a good deal and are doing the right thing.

I don't know what to suggest about Kyrre being indoors. My kitties like to go outside and I have tried to keep them in without much luck. Especially Mittens. She just loves the outdoors.

If I ever moved though, my kitties would have to become indoor kitties.
I'm sure Kyrre will adjust fine. The Kitty Condo does sound like a good idea. Also, maybe give him some a little extra playtime with you and lost of pettings and rubbing of the ears. :)

I'm sorry for you! It's hard to end a relationship that you've put a lot of work into. I hope everything's for the best!

Every kitty loves a condo, so I think that's a great idea.

It sounds like you both have a tough rode ahead, I wish you the best!

Saskatchewan sounds great! just give us a couple of days to pack our bags, lol

I've been living in my new place for a week now, and I'm doing great. Kyrre is still living with my ex, and I miss him sooo much (Kyrre, not my ex  ) But I want to get settled in before I move him, and I also have to ask the landlord if it's ok... So keep your fingers crossed, I don't know what I'll do if she says no... :? But she seems really nice so I'm hoping it won't be a problem. I don't have a computer of my own yet, so I won't be around much, but I'll pop by from time to time :D

Thanks for the update, Bente. Hopefully, you'll be able to get to a computer and let us know how things is going. Most libraries have computers hooked to the internet that you can use. Hope you'll be back soon. :)

Must be so hard being without Kyrre. At least it gives you a chance to move things around, paint, settle in without stressing Kyrre out with all the commotion. Keeping fingers and paws crossed that Kyrre and you will be reunited soon!
