Kyttyn has a lump on her chest

When I got home from work everything was normal. Kyttyn did her usual jump in the counter, feed me now, routine. A few minutes later one of my nephew's friends called me into the other room and told me he felt a lump on Kyttyn's belly. A lump?!? There is a hard, bone like, thing protruding from her sternum area...comparing to a human, it's where your ribs meet, just below the breast area. It's a little but smaller than the size of a golf ball.

She is acting completely normal. She jumped up on the counter to be fed when I got home. She was playing with the dog. She even scaled the floor to ceiling cat tower with no problem. I poked and examined the area with no response of any pain from her. I am completely puzzled. It feels like bone. I immediately called the vet...closed....I called the emergency vet and explained. They said I could bring her in but since she was acting so normal they didn't think it was an emergency. It's $100.00 just to walk in the door....not that I wouldn't go if I thought she was in eminent danger...she's acting like she is fine.

I left a message for my regular vet, whom I'm sure will fit me first thing tomorrow morning. Anyone have any idea what this could be??

I'd get it checked out...but cats do have a "floating rib" so to speak. Floating sternum - was looking it up online to get more detail but I got lost in other stuff

Thanks Vene and Mary for your quick replies!

That web site was interesting. I first clicked on the link for "lumps on cats" and was amazed at the how similar the first questions was..

and the answer..among other thing....seems to point to a hernia.

My goodness...I've never been through this before. I will let you know what the vet says tomorrow.

hi wtpooh...i just read this post. i sure hop kytten is okay. i will be waiting on pins and needles....you know she is one of my favorite kitties!!!

vene just told me about this...initially when she told me....my heart dropped to my stomach....i just love your kitty so much...

so...i will say a prayer tonight. its probably benign...most likely a hernia like you were saying....shes so young...cant imagine it would be anything other than a minor thing....

My vet called me as soon as he got into the office this morning....he is so great...I have to get this guy a gift of some sort. He's always been so good with my furbabies....

All he really said after the initial exam was some sort of trama near the sternum area, possible break. He would have to do an x-ray so I had to leave her there ***sobs*** I hate when I have to leave the vet without my babies.

    So now I wait.....

Well...we're still not sure what caused it....trauma of some sort....but she has a tiny bone near her sternum that is poking out....it's not broken...just bent...and the tissue around it is swollen. I wish I could post the xray here so you all can see it. She is on kitty steroids for the next 7 days and is on a strict no jumping regimine....I wish I could get her to understand this! You would never know by the way she is acting. The vet said the swelling will go down but the bone may always be protruding out a bit.

*comes running in with flowers and many kitty treats* what i miss!? *reads threads*

Gosh.. i'm sorry about Kytten... how strange that should happen.

its very important to stress to your furbabies NOT to have any parties when u are away. things like this are bound to happen. ;) i'm sure she'll be ok with alittle rest.

ok...I found a site that has a picture that looks like my xray.

    http://www.cfa.org/articles/body.html

Go to the third picture down...it's that Xiphoid on the bottom left of the picture...that almost exactly how the xray looks.

Thank you all for the replies and concern. She isn't acting any different than any other day so I'm sure she will be fine. The Doc said the steroid will make her drink and urinate more.

Glad Kytten is ok. Phew! I know that people break their xiphoid easily. I used to x-ray them all the time. But I didn't know that about kitties. How does one stop a cat from jumping? It's like telling people not to talk or walk. :m10:

I'm so glad she's ok **phew**. I was hesitant to post before you posted the 'all clear' because I get so emotional over kitty health issues. If my hubby catches me crying at the keyboard one more time, he'll take my computer away from me! LOL

I asked my vet today about Kyttyn's condition and she told me it is quite common for cats to develop bent xiphoids and it doesn't usually bother them.

She is perfectly fine  Thanks for checking in Lynn! You really wouldn't even know there was something wrong except for the bump. The swelling has gone down a bit but you can still feel the "bent" bone. Kyttyn has given me no problems when I give her the pills either. Luckily they are tiny little things.

Vene-Thanks for asking your vet. It makes me feel better to hear that this is common.

Thank you all for your replies!!
