I am new here but hoping someone can give me some directoin.
I am the mommy to a 9 month old male pit (Guage). I live in Ohio and recently they have started cracking down on Pit bull owners requiring them to carry $100,000 liability insurance on pits. Now not only do I find this to be COMPLETELY ridiculous I am at a loss as to finding an insurance company that provides this. Currently where I live if they catch you without insurance they ticket you and the judge gives you 2 weeks to come up w/ proof of insurance, if at that time you still have nothing they take the pup and put it to sleep.
I am hoping maybe someone knows of an insurance company I can call or hopefully someone can give me some direction.
I DO NOT want to loose my baby.
    :(
    Thanks in advance,
    Melanie

mellied: I'm still looking into this myself. In AZ it's not manditory to carry the extra insurance, but most homeowners insurance companies will not insure my dogs.

Right now I'm hiding my two Pits from my homeowners. I feel confident there will be no incident, but with the way people are today, (sue crazy), it's always in the back of my mind.

I'm still doing research online. If I find anything promising, I'll p.m. you. Just keep your guy as stealth as possible. What ever you do, don't let anyone from the City or Animal Control take your dog. Once he's in their pocession, they will probably put him to sleep. Don't take any intimidation. They will have to have a court order to come into your home and confiscate your dog. That takes time. That will give you the time necessary to relocate him temporarily.

I feel for you. This whole B.S.L. thing is just that. Bu#l Sh#t Laws.

I haven't had to deal with this problem yet, but a friend of mine who breeds APBTs says his old insurance dropped him (or skyrocketed and he dropped them - don't remember which). Anyway - he now has Allstate and says #1 - they are cheaper than his old insurance was even before they found out about his dogs and #2 - they have no problem with insuring someone with APBTs. That is here in TN.

I am blown away at how different it is for different states, and even different cities within the states. I know that Ohio is alot more strict on Pitt's than other states and that is why I am running into this problem.
I have tried just about every major insurance company (Allstate, State Farm, Nationwide, GEICO...you name it) and as soon as you mention you have a pitt they blow you off. To be totally and completely honest with you, it seems like the only way to get the insurance is to lie, just up the renters insurance to a $100,000 liability and never even mention the pitt.
I am at a loss and don't know what else to do.

Renee, when I had farmers for homowners, they asked what type of dogs I had, and I recently switched to AAA and they didnt ask at all about dogs

i hope that never happens but i never let them out with out a leash even if we are just sitting in the front yard i chain them up. Sometimes they sneak out the front door and run down the street so we will chase them but they always stop to give people kiss's on the way i yell catch em they say aww he is so cute and let him go geez

Sorry I know this is an old post but I have insurance through state farm and I asked about my dog (husky) b/c while I was looking online most companies would not insure with a husky in the home. Anyway I asked them what they ban and she said nothing. Maybe it was just this branch but I dont know. Do you have to have seperate insurance on thedog or are you talking about home owners. Sorry this is a stupid question I just dont know lol.

    UGH

So I have been researching this more and more trying to find out what the heck it is I need to keep my baby from being taken away. One person will tell me I need to just make sure I have a $100,000 liability on my renters/homeowners policy. Then I have other people telling me I have to have a complete seperate insurance policy on him. The quote I received today for this type of insurance was $599 semi annual, $998 annual with a $2500 deductable. What is wrong with this picture? Who can afford this kind of insurance.........I Would definitely say they are trying to diminish the PIT BULL breed around here.
