Litter box advice?

Hi all, just wanted to know if anyone has problems keeping the litter in the litter box. My male cat (Im pretty sure its him) cannot keep the litter in the box. And whats worse is that while he is trying to cover up his mess, he will fling some of the poo right out of the box! This morning I had to wash the wall ACROSS from the box, seeing as how he made a mess pretty much all over the bathroom. Im thinking that he has the mess still on his paws when he comes out of the box, because I am finding little "poo" prints in the bathroom.

Im not sure if its the canned cat food, but he has a much softer stool than my female. They are around 12 weeks old, and have been to the vet, UTD on shots, and eat regularly.....but he seems to have messier bathroom breaks. Today I started giving the dry cat food throughout the day, and cutting the canned back to in the evenings, and maybe the mornings. I always mix the wet, with the dry just to make sure that they dont get too used to one over the other.....any hoo, any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Im hoping that he will start to get better at cleaning up his mess, and if the canned food is making his stool really soft...then maybe the dry will help.

Oh, sorry that this is a pretty gross post in general...I tried to make it as pleasant as possible considering the topic!!!

My recommendation would be to get a box with a lid on it...or at least the raised side walls.

Some people I know have bought plexiglass from the home improvement store and screwed it up in the corner the box was in...for easy clean-up and all.

With every litter box there's always gonna be a little bit outside the box, so don't expect every little speck to disappear....but those suggestions should help with the poo on the walls and the majority of the litter.

    Good luck!! :y_the_best:

What kind of litter do you use? Litter box type?

I've tried several different litters with Vianne becuz i was getting so annoyed with the mess she made. Not her fault, she just has sticky paws I guess. Finally I've come to a happy place with the cat box issues. I use Yesterday's News kitty litter which is the best i've tried as far as low tracking. I got her a covered kitty box and there's a track mat infront of her box. So every night or every other night i pick up her mat and shake any loose litter back into her box. Any other small pieces I can sweep up once or twice a week since it's really not bad at all anymore. Plus the Yesterday's News is big pellets, not tiny grains, so its much much easier to get up off of the floor. I throw a little of that Arm & Hammer Baking Soda Litter powder in the corner where she likes to do most of her urinating and we've got a great little sytem now. Also make sure you try to scoop out any solid waste as often as possible so he isn't flicking around old poo that's piled up in his box when he's trying to move his litter around. Hope i helped :)

Thanks for the tips. I guess I should have added some of the details, sorry!

I do have a covered litter box, and we just bought the litter mat for in front of the box. I am using Tidy Cats for multiple cats litter. And I do use the Arm and Hammer. It has a nice fresh smell. And so far I have been VERY good about cleaning the box every morning :) . The box is kept up well, and I change the entire bag of litter about every 3rd day.

We had considered buying a covered litter box with a door, but weren't sure that they would use the box. The man that I got the kittens from was using an open litter box, so the covered box was a new experience. We thought the door may frighten them away. Now Im thinking I should have gotten the one with the door!!!!!

I dont mind the usual mess from the litter, its just that he is flinging the litter and the mess ALL over the place. The litter isnt just in front of the box, its across the room, on the walls. Very messy. Its like he is turning around in the box, and deliberatly swishing the litter out of the opening! I will have to try using the larger grain litter. Im sure that the litter is being tracked out somewhat on his feet....or maybe the mat will do the trick. As for the poo making its way out of the box, that is something I have to remedy!

some of this could just be his age...my Zeus (always Zeus) would play in the litter when he was a kitten. He couldn't wait for me to clean the box and refil then he'd play in there like a kid in a sandbox  scattering stuff all over the place. He doesn't do that anymore although he is a tracker....maybe when your little fella grows up he'll develop some neater litterbox behavior

Thanks for the advice everyone! Im hoping that it is something that he will get better about over time....I really dont want to have to buy another litter box, when the one they have is brand new. At least now I feel better that Im not the only one who has ever had a messy cat.....maybe its because hes a boy, boys are generally messier in the bathroom anyhoo!!! My boys are at least! :D
