Anyone else have a small dog/puppy and a larger dog that get along well? I have a 13 week old multipoo mix and a 5 year old german shorthair/chocolate lab mix(both female)...they seem to love each other....the lab is always bringing puppy toys to tug with and you can tell she's being extra gentle with the play....she is still 60 lbs. to the puppy's 2.5 lbs though..the pup does what puppies do and bites and growls during play, which i try to stop as soon as i see happening...josie seems to take this in stride though and will 'bump' puppy with her mouth held wide open when she starts to get out of hand....? i'm constantly watching them play with an eagle eye because i am nervous about the puppy getting hurt...
anyone else successfully brought in a small puppy to an older adult dog and had it work out well? How do they normally play and are there any signs of aggression from the older/bigger dog that i should watch out for?

My dogs get along great although they don't really play with each other. Sebastian (7 lb. toy poodle) was 6yrs old when I brought him home though. He and Natalie (40 lb aussie x) lay together, eat together, ect and have always gotten along well...no fights between them ever.
Maybe once your puppy grows up it will be easier for you to trust the two of them together. Your right in doing so since the little one could be easily accidently hurt by the large one.

I have an Alaskan Malamute who weighs between 65-70 pounds, and a long haired dachshund who's 19 pounds. Not exactly tiny, but he's still much smaller than she is. Before I got him, I had a miniature dachshund who was around 10 pounds. With both of the little guys, the Mal has been pretty carefull about how she plays and interacts with them. We haven't had any real problems. But the Mal does like to take all the toys and lay on top of them so no one can get them.

My 110# Rott and 5# chi/fox terrier never had any problems, the chi would jump on the Rotts head and bite her ears, when she'd had enough she'stand up and shake her head, the chi would jump down and bite her feet (just playing) it was cute watching a huge Rott dance around her as she didnt want to stand on her.
A place I used to work, the owners had an Afghan and a small Pom, they'd board occasionally and the Pom would always sleep on the Afghan's hip....Very cute.

Should i just let them play even when puppy is nipping at josie's ears and face?...I've never really let it go long enough for josie to walk away from the little one when she's ready.....she usually just plays back or distracts the puppy with a toy.....i don't think puppy is hurting the bigger dog and josie just lightly (open mouthed) bites back at puppy, i just get really nervous of her biting puppy too hard...i've been told by others that i am way to nervous about it and am probably makign the dogs nervous too...

I'm not going to say there wont be a problem as Im not there and I do think that the playing should be monitored but from what you say it sounds as though things are pretty normal, the bigger dog is being entertained and the puppy, while also being entertained is learning quality social behaviours. Usually with the older dogs, when they've had enough or the puppy gets too rough there my be...not so much of a growl, more of a 'grunt', dogs communicate vocally and through their body language, the pup already knows the difference between 'its okay to play' and 'thats it...I need my space back'. It doesn't sound as though the older dog is showing any signs of aggression at all which is great but as the pup is only 2.5# I would be a little concerned about the playing becoming to excited as accidents can happen. Just be aware of what they're doing and try and relax and enjoy watching them interact.

I can't think of her name, but there is a girl with a husky and chihuahua and they seem to get along well. Luther is small-med size he is 18lbs and gets along with all dogs.

I had a rottie for 5 years and then brought home a baby yorkie i was really scared at first and would not let them be togather unless i was right there. Nala (rottie) was great after a few weeks they played togather (tug of war it was really funny) they got along great (oh my yorkie is a male) then i went and got a female yorkie and nala didn't like her much she put up with her but didnt really want to play with her and jasmine was always laying in front of nalas face and licking her nala would growl and jasmine would go away. I was a wonderfull site to see them playing tho sometime i think nala would forget who she was playing with and sebastain would go flying across the room lol.
