My "little girl" is nearly one year old and now weighs nearly 15 pounds. She may be a tad overweight, ( I am not sure) but her mother was very large too. I switched her from Royal Canin kitten food to their Maine Coon food a month ago. I always just let her free feed. I give her about 6 oz. ( which is the suggested amount based on her weight) in the morning and it is all gone by 10:00AM. So she has no food the rest of the day until I give her a small portion of wet food around 7:00PM. My question, do most other cats seem to gobble up their main meal in just 3 hours?

I'm not really all that familiar with behavior or eating habits of Maine coons, sorry! :( My kitty is only 6 lbs at over 1yr and she's a grazer. I free feed her dry food all day long from her automatic feeder dish. Then a few times a week I offer about 1oz of canned food around late afternoon and she mostly just licks the gravy and leaves a lot of the chunks which i give to my rats as a treat. She's just not that much into actually eating her food. She loves to smell it and begs me to give it to her but she never eats much in one sitting. although she LOVES those crunchy Aquari-YUMs treats and would proabably munch those all day long if i let her! Pretty useful for training. She already knows "come here" "up" and "sit", now we are working on "paw" for a handshake, heehee. Hope someone else has some better insight for you!

    Maine coon eating habits..

I wouldnt be worried in the least, My grandmother had a maine coon and his food never lasted. He was about 20lbs... maybe more but our vet always said he was a healthy weight and very healthy cat. I think they just eat so much because of how beastly they are. lol

    :)

Thanks for all the replys. I spoke to her breeder. She said her mother is at least that size. I also decided to change her food a bit. I now give her 4 oz. of Royal Maine Coon 31 mixed with 3 oz. Royal Canin Indoor cat food. The Maine Coon 31 has very large kibble made for a Maine Coon. So when you measure it out in a cup, it does not provide as much food as their much smaller Indoor kibble. Plus the Indoor has far less calories. So now she gets a bigger portion and with less calories. Her bowl stays full now most of the day. I plan to adjust her portions until she runs out around 4:00PM or so. I give her a small amout of wet food in the early evening.
