:?: We have a little argument going here......the question is..... Between the Male and Female dog, who is the one that determines how many pups are born???

My first guess would be God... my second guess is ... depends on how many eggs and how many sperm actually reach and fertilize the said eggs...that doesn't help much does it? Ok... the woman is ALWAYS right!!

I'm guessing it's the Female and the amount of eggs produced, split, and fertilized.

I believe it's the male that determines the sex with the amount of X and Y chromosomes. Probably wrong. It's very complicated.

Hi as a breeder i know its the female that determines how many eggs get released and how many get fertilised.
Any leftover eggs are expelled during the last part of her cycle.

Females have control over there egg production they seem to know how many there body can handle if they are fertilised and carried to term any that are fertilised and she knows she cant carry that amount she will absorb back into her body this happens at the very start of the pregnancy.

If a female has an ultrasound scan while in whelp a skilled vet that can read scans well will be able to tell you if any whelps have been reabsorbed or in the process of this happening.

But all in all its the female that determines it all the male determines the sexes of the whelps.

Definately the female. She will produce a "said" # of eggs. Determining that the male is fertile and that the sperms are reaching the eggs and how many will attach to the uterine wall will determine how many she will have. SHe will also reabsorb any eggs to "sort" out the number of which she will have

As far as gender goes, its based on the X and Y choromasomes. There are a number of factors built into the theory of what determines the gender. Sertain economical conditions, general health of the dogs, and receptancy of the bitch to the male can determine a number of things. Its not yet been prooven which determines the gender of the offspring. Some vets feel that its several factors, some feel that a male (or female) has an abundance of X or Y on their RNa..... I can go on forever about this....

SO basically what I'm saying is taht you won't know until their born. You can opt to have x ray and sonograms done to determine the number of whelps, but their not going to be able to tell you if its male or female.....

About gender. Females are XX and males are XY. All the eggs carry an X chromosome, because that's all a female has! The sperm can carry either an X or a Y. If an X, the pup is a girl. If a Y, the pup is a boy.

That being said, there are all sorts of theories about the acidity of the female's reproductive tract and other similar conditions that influence which sperm are more likely to survive and fertilize the eggs. So it's not necessarily a 50-50 chance!

i thought about this last night, if the female produces 10 eggs and the male only has 3 sperm, then I guess it would be the male who decides how many? don't think that would ever happen, but maybe??

No. There are hundreds (thousands?) of sperm in every "squirt".

Jmaiya is right. Typically the normal sperm count for a "DOG" is around 100,000. A bull the sperm count is around "250000", I believe if I'm not mistaken a human is around "150000"....I'll look it up to confirm my numbers, but if I remember correctly from Zoology thats right.....

yea I have heard that a spoonful of human sperm could repopulate the earth. So it could be more? I have no idea, I just know that it is a lot!
