Man Arrested, Accused Of Demanding Ransom For Dog

BOSTON -- A Quincy man wins his puppy back after tense negotiations with a dognapper.

Timothy Connors left his keys, his cell phone and the pooch named Dakota in his pickup truck when he stopped at a convenience store Wednesday.

When he came out, the truck was gone. Connors said he called his cell phone and it was answered by the thief who demanded $500 ransom and threatened to kill the dog if police intervened.

Connors and a friend arranged a meeting at Boston's Downtown Crossing. There, Connors' friend gave the man $43 that was rolled up with napkins to make it look like $500.

Connors said the man took the money without counting it, handed over the keys to the truck and left.

But he didn't get far before being arrested by police who had in fact been alerted and staked out the area. They charged Michael Cyr, of Salem, with extortion, among other things.

Connors was reunited with Dakota and vowed never to leave the puppy alone again
