I have a two year old staffie that we are trying to breed with a 9 year old. Neither have mated before and although she is standing for him he is only sniffing and not mounting or even getting an erection. We have tried to encourage him to mount but he isnt. What should i do?

No offence but if you do not know something as simple as this then you really should not be breeding.

Have both dogs had all relevant health checks and tests done?
Are both dogs up to date on there worming and vaccinations?

Have you researched both parents backgrounds?

    Simple questions to answer

Do you know the correct age to breed?
DO you know how long the cycle of a dog lasts?
Do you know when the best time is to mate a dog?
Do you know how long a dogs gestation period is?
Could you spot a problem during pregnancy or whelping?
Do you have the room to keep the mother and atleats 6 puppies?
Do you have the money at hand incase of an emergancy?
Do you have the money to look after the mother and her litter correctly?
Would you be willing to take back any pup that someone can no longer keep for some reason even if its 5years down the line?
Can you cull any pups that have things wrong with them like missing limbs, Cleft palate, Hare Lip ?

Answer to you question just becauseshe is standing for him does not mean she is ready.
Him being 9 years old he may have a problem with his hips making it hurt when he tries to mount.
