My bird seem to be itchy.

Hello!! Just a question from an unexperienced bird guy haha... I realize that birds ARE wild animals and there itchy however quite often but not ridiculously often.. my bird seem to be itching herself with her beak by nipping and biteing at herself under the wind and stomach etc... is this just natural itching or could it be some sort of lice etc?? Are there any precautions I should take?? I have only had her for 4 days... seems healthy otherwise...

 

try giving her a bath with a myst bottle of watrm water

the only way to know if she has mites is to bring her to a vet

please do not use the mite things that they sell in pet stores these can kill your bird

But what I really wanted to know is do your birds seem to do the same thing?? It is definatly not all the time... I just got up this morning and she hasnt done it all morning.. Im gonna try the bath idea though.. thanks

 

Buster itches like that. He also used his beak to itch his back.

Definately try the warm water mist. My guys love it.

If you see her pulling out a lot of feathers this will have to be watched

 

Buster Blue does that also... but its with his feet, and whenever i look at his feet theres nothing there... and the only time he likes water is when its like really hot out, but since it's winter, and im in Minnesota im sacred to get him wet because he will get cold

 

Ohh well she has not pulled a single feather out yet... I guess that is the difference thanks guys!! So do you just use a standard windex style bottle... I KNOW NOT AN OLD WINDEX BOTTLE LOL just that kinda sprayer you can buy them brand new... I read somewhere that too fine of a mist makes htem sneeze and isnt good...

 

Hi,
Any water getting in their noses will make them sneeze. My cockatiels quiet often love hoping in the shower while its running or simply in a small cage different to the normal cage and under the hose on mist outside as they are inside birds. It all depends on how they like it.
